Hiyah all, I'm experiencing a little difficulty and I have run into problems, and it probably not going to be for the first time.

I have recently purchased a 1988 W124 230E. I know that this was a lovely car to drive but right now it ain't going anywhere. The car had a very hard life before it came to me. The bodywork was pretty bad especially the 2 front wings that are corroded beyond repair. That problem is just the icing on the cake. This is starting to turn out to be a mammoth restoration job.

At the moment I have taken the engine out and am in the middle of stripping it down in order to overhaul it. On this subject I have run into a problem; I am trying to remove the crankshaft pulley hub. I have my trusty Haynes manual and it is telling me very little. It is telling me to make a tool in order to hold it steady so the centre nut can be removed.

I am hoping that someone out there has at one time or another has performed the same task and would be able to give me some advice on how to do this. What kind of tool to make, or if there is a tool that can be bought, where can I get one?

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated and will probably save my sanity.

Try locking the flywheel ring gear with a pawl that can be bolted on via one of the starter bell housing bolt holes.
That should lock the crank and allow removal of the bolt.
