Could someone please tell me what this thing on the front of my 1998 E280's rear view mirror is for please. It looks like some sort of sensor / LED but it never seems to do anything. I'm attaching a picture with an arrow to show what I'm talking about...apologies for the the poor quality but I think you'll get the gist.

It looks like the ambient light sensor for the automatic dimming mirror.

test procedure:-
turn on lights.
block that sensor with a finger.
get small torch and shine at small dot on RHS of mirror (shiney side)
Shiney side should get less shiney
turn on lights.
block that sensor with a finger.
