My car has developed a thump sort of noise. It appears to happen when I dab the gas pedal or when I release the gas.

For example I'm moving around 10mph, I then press the gas pedal to speed up and I hear a thump. If I was then to come of the power as I take my foot of the gas pedal I hear it again.

It seem to be coming from the drive train. Maybe prop shaf, dif or rear drive shafts.

I'm hoping it's not the gear box but could possibly be that too.

Any ideas? Car is an 2001 E320 cdi (w210)

Check the boot for anything rolling back and forth under acceleration and braking. I had similar and turned out to be an apple! Random I know....

Lol had a laugh at your expense reading that post. I have nothing in my boot at the moment buddy.

Mine does the same but much more pronounced coming off the gas, than on it.

Thanks for all the responses. Seems to be a few potential causes for the thump noise.

I've noticed the thump noise is more apparent if I've been booting the car for a few hours and then go back to my normal driving.

Does this narrow the it down ?

^ Whatever the cause, you'll need it confirmed by a decent indy. Hopefully nothing too expensive.

Rear subframe front mounts are a favorite. Other possibilities can be propshaft doughnuts as said already [ GT] or the centre propshaft flexible mount, or the rear differential mounts-they get soaked in oil and go soft.
