I've noticed that my recently acquired W124 is making a clicking/ticking noise when reversing.

The car drives perfectly other than this and it doesn't happen in forward gears. Gear changes are smooth up and down the 'box.

This only seems to happen after a cold start. After the car has warmed up the noise quietens significantly, to the point where it can no longer be heard.

Any ideas?

The car has 120k on it, and is in great condition overall. I've done 1000 miles in the past week, and it's never missed a beat. Great long distance car!

Possibly a problem with the rear handbrake shoes inside the little drum brake that's part of the rear disc. Try gently applying the foot operated parking brake pedal as you reverse- choose a nice open space like an empty car park----- try pulling the handbrake release at the same time that way the parking brake acts like a little foot operated drum brake but doesn't latch on --but will go off as you release the parking pedal. If the sound changes then it might be a clue to your problem.
