Trivial I know,

But does anyone know if it is possible to buy just the outer shell of a three button key fob?

Ta

Gary

Yes, have a look in the for sale section. There is a merc parts man username partsspecialist who will post it for £10, nice chap too. Gareth.

Though the newer keys are shorter than the older keys....I am working out how this transplant could happen....If you already have a shorter key you could get the chrome option.

Ian

Cheers Ian,

I'm not averse to a little experimentation at that price :-)

Any idea if there are posts on here as to detailed reasons why the chromed fob is a no-go?

Questions questions :-)

Seen the advert, how do I contact Gareth?

I didn't see a PM thing, so... do I use his linky?

Ta

Gary

I PM'ed him,

Give him a call :

at Mercedes-Benz of Manchester
Gareth in Parts.

Mention mbclub and the key thing.

Cheers Ian

You have not made enough posts to qualify for being able to send a pm to a member..I think you have to make 30?? posts first....its a security thing.

Ahhh, thanks X332Race!

That would be why the icon doesn't appear :-)

Now, 19 more posts without spamming....

Where does a first time owner of a Mercedes start.....

Thinking head on!

You cant put the gubbins from an old all-plastic fob inside a new chrome fob - it wont fit.
You have to use like-for-like.
Unfortunately.
I know this to be true as I have one of each type.

After a few Whiskey's I keep thinking about attacking it with a nail file :-)

Its not just the size of the little PCB thats different, its the spacings/pitch between the 3 buttons thats different as well.
So attack away my friend ! ! ;) All you will succeed in doing is ruining one fob and making your wallet £200 lighter.
Sorry.:(

Ian, Verytalldave,

If.... the fob could be errr, modified, do you think the electronics would align properly with the rubber skin?

Ian C, Verytalldave,

Thats that question answered then :-(

Shame thats a circuit board issue and not a mechanical issue.

Back to the drawing board :-)

You can still get the right fob from him for £10, I did and was very happy!

Cheers Chattonmill,

I am going to invest in the proper fob :-(

And... I'm going to ask him to price up the pedal mod :-)

And... ask if the door pins and surrounds are available in aluminium finish rather than chrome :-)

Mercedes have obviously been quite deliberate in making the PCBs between the old and new fobs incompatible. They could have very easily made them the same and interchangeable - but no.
Otherwise all everyone would have done would be to buy the new key case and swap the internals over - and hey presto - one new chrome key.
I used to have photos showing the (slight but important) differences, but they have gone AWOL.

Also, one further difference is that the shapes of the removable manual door key is different between the old/new fobs and the old shape key wont fit in the new shape fob.

Pedal mod is quite cheap and as for the door pins, should be about 80p each!!!

Verytalldave,

Typical - you couldn't get an engineer here to change a pcb for love nor money (cost of drawing office time) but MB change the pitch of the switches for fun :-(

Kwakdonut, can I buy aluminium effect door pins?

Ta Gents

Good point, while on the phone I could do with two door pins. Cheapest from Merc IIRC.

Let me know if I can get alloy, or if the chrome ones are 80p, if you could be so kind.
