Just got back from a trip to the in-laws (south of Germany), in the Vito for the first time. Vehicle never missed a beat and was absolutely perfect for the trip. Quiet and refined, loads of room, and 8 month old Baby BTB able to sit between us in the front (pretty handy on an 11 hour journey). We took our two youngest dogs who have their ‘pet passports’ … that left room for extra luggage in the lower cages. 2 seats in the middle for my step-kids (who we brought back), plus baby buggy, cycle trailer, and assorted other bits & pieces.

(note the 911 in the background!)

Very quick and easy on the Eurotunnel (as normal), although being just over the 1.85 metre height limit we had to go in the single-decker part of the train

Took it steady on the way out and back to minimise fuel stops ... cruise control set to 120 kph (75 mph). Got 30.1 mpg on the way there (mostly daylight), and 29.1 mpg on the way back (mostly in the dark). Wonder if the difference was the extra load from the headlights? Relatively painless for a long drive - combination of cruise control, auto gearbox, and smooth & torquey diesel worked very well. And plenty of range in hand with just a single fuel stop … could probably have stretched it to 500 miles from a tank if necessary (which it wasn’t). Almost makes up for not having a remaining miles (or fuel amount) readout on the trip computer!

The trusty TomTom 910 did a great job on the navigation - the latest software release means I can have it in the M-B cradle (handsfree via the steering wheel buttons and Sound 20 audio) while also linked to the TomTom via Bluetooth to feed GPRS traffic data.

On Thursday we went down to the Bodensee (Lake Constance) - a roughly 300 mile round trip, much of it on unrestricted autobahn. Went in convoy with my in-laws in their 'silver with a hint of blue' SLK280

- at a steady 160 kph (100 mph) most of the way. On the return trip I wound it up a bit more, cruising at 175 kph (109 mph) where appropriate (perfect weather, quiet roads, and light traffic) with shorter bursts of 180-plus kph. The Vito felt totally planted and stable at all times, and accelerating away from other traffic at over 90 mph in a van was somewhat surreal! The only downside was that a light-fingered local in Meersburg nicked the 'official' alloy tyre valve dust caps while it was parked there! Went to the local main dealer next day (Leonberg) … parts dept. had never heard of them but managed to find them on the computer, none in stock so I took some ordinary ones for now. I’ll get a set for the in-laws’ R171 as well … and some chrome indicator bubs (I was astonished to find it had orange ones front and back).

While walking the dogs one day the hills were alive to the sound of music ... in the form of a howling race-tuned engine and sequential gearbox. Turned out to be a nearby Porsche facility that has its own test track

Speaking of Porsches, Baby BTB had a go in this one (supposedly a 911 C4 :D):

But he was more impressed with his own brand-new roadster:

Finally a gratuitous picture of the local Shell station … will post some other ‘scenic’ ones in off-topic when I get the time.

Quite a handy tool all round then.

I didn't think you could get them in the crew cab style.

Dave!

Yup it's called a Vito Dualiner (the Traveliner is the minibus version with 3 rows of seats).

With the 'ordinary' Vito 120 you can choose 2 or 3 seats in the front. With the special editions (Sport, and Sport-X) you can't ... you just get a single front passenger seat. Same with the Viano. There's not a huge amount of legroom in the middle at the front but it's ideal for a small kid.

With "comfort" seating the middle row is a 2+1 ... we have the "1" removed (the seats just slot in like an MPV, and flip/fold etc.). The rear backrests also recline individually, we put them back a bit to encourage the boys (aged 5 and 8) to sleep. There's even ISOfix on the centre one, and the doors have child locks too.

Run that bit by me again, please - do you mean the TomTom linked by Bluetooth the phone (which was in the MB cradle)?

I wondered why you'd put the dogs at the top - thinking about water (etc :) ) spilling down and that perhaps they'd travel better lower down - but then I realised it's so they can see out the window. ;)

Yup. The phone is in the M-B wired cradle, so all the hands-free stuff is as normal through the vehicle. The TomTom pairs with the same phone via Bluetooth, but purely as a wireless data connection (not hands-free).

Earlier TomTom software assumed that if the TT was linked to a phone via Bluetooth then you wanted to use the TT as the hands-free device. And with that connection made, you couldn't put the phone into a wired cradle (because you can only have one hands-free link active at a time).

Now you can enable/disable hands-free and data individually on the TomTom.

They sleep most of the time anyway, it was really just easier not having to lift luggage up into the top (the dogs jump up there on their own :)). Also the divider is normally fitted at the top but not the bottom, so easier to get the dogs out one at a time at the Eurotunnel (to have micro chips read) ... and able to put bigger things in the bottom.

Sounds like a good trip,

We have been back a week now from Our trip to Annecy. One journey 850mile and 21 hours !!! Baby A210 loves the car so just as well :)

Bus did 25mpg at 85mph on cruise so I'm happy with that. Like you I'm amazed how much stuff we ended up with and glad the ML has a good boot :)

Hey, pics look great. Quick word on your vito, well sprinter if possible, does anyone know how they rate amongst other vans?? I've currently got an eye out for a Sprinter, preferably MWB, High Roof, 04-05 with good mileage on the clock.

Thanks
Ibrar :)

Do you mean 25mpg for the whole trip or 25mpg at an instant, or short period. It's just that 850/21 = 40mph average. Take off 3 hrs for ferry and stoppages and that's 47mph average.
I managed 32mpg to Germany/Denmark and back..in a Peugeot diesel.. but my 850 miles only took 14 hours..including ferry and stops..:D

Our return journey (door to door) was 11 hours; that included a 45 min. wait before we could check in for the first train of the day (04:45) as we got to Calais earlier than expected. IIRC the average speed (on the cluster display) was 63 mph, but it was all clear motorway apart from a short bit each end and the Eurotunnel in the middle. We only stopped once for fuel/toilet, 15 mins at most.

850 miles in 14 hours (with a ferry crossing) is shifting!

I was actually surprised how little the MPG suffered when driving the Vito a lot faster ... on our trip to the Bodensee and back I think it only dropped to about 23 MPG.

Dog cages

Hi,

Who designed and made the dog cages you used in your Vito?

That looks fun Bill, really like the look of your Vito, what age is it (Or are we not alloed to talk age on here lols! Looks the biz.. I have to confess my Vito was meant for work instead its been a second car and the Mrs loves it unfortunately though being UE its needing minor TLC but still runs and does what I need including bailing out a band that I went to see..

It's nearly 10 years old now - this is a 9 year old thread (almost)!

He prefers the SL now :)

The mobile phone in pic 4 really dates this thread :)
+DM contributing......times gone by

LOL still going well, only on about 80k miles though. Only issue is that the rear wiper motor has died ... seems to be a common problem on Vitos & Vianos. It's not a big deal and don't imagine it will be expensive to sort, just haven't got round to it yet.
