Took the C43 for "A" Service + MOT this morning.

While i was waiting the service man came and told me that the car needed new Spark Plugs, i told him they had been fitted at 50,000 miles some 16,000 miles ago.

He said he could not stamp the Service Book unless he had proof that they had been fitted. The Garage that fitted them was TM Motors a very well know MB specialist in the Surrey area, which he had indeed heard of and infact knew the owner Tony. Anyway i had the invoice Faxed from home and he was sort of happy, because i had supplied the Plugs for Tony to fit and he asked if they where OEM Plugs !!, it also had to be a VAT registered Co that did the work.

I asked him why as it had not happened to me before. He said MB had changed the rules about seven months ago. Anything big like Plugs etc that needed doing on a Service they needed proof that the work was done, otherwise no Stamp.

I suplied my own Mobil 1 and with the 40% off Labour and 10% off Parts + the MOT the bill was £128.60 +vat.

When i had my C43 "A" serviced a few months ago the exact same thing happened to me they threatened not to stamp the book, as they said the plugs, air filter, brake fluid needed to be changed. I was not happy and made it known as strongly as I could without appearing to get too upset, telling them that everything had been done approx, 1000 miles before, but as it was they stamped the book for me, and got a complimentary box of Thorntons chocs. But I only got 20% discount.

If you live in Weybridge, why go to Guildford? Have you had a bad experience with MB World? (sorry if i've missed anything)

No infact Brooklands have looked after my S-Class since i picked it up from Germany.

The reason i go to Guilford is that you get 40% off Labour and 10% of Parts on cars over 6 years old, you don't at Brooklands.

Brooklands do offer discounts for cars over 3 years, but I can't remember the actual discounts at the mo.

I'm surpised more dealers don't do this since the end of Block Exemption. The stamp signifies that the work required has been done, and done to the standards that they set. If something is required in the service schedule (like a plugs for fluids change) and you say it's already been done, why should they put their stamp to work that they know nothing about?

As times get tougher, I would expect to see this being required more and more.

Catch 22 for them. Question is will it chase away more people than it hooks in.

If they're not selling as many new cars then they're not repriming the pipeline with customers coming over the first 3 years of warranty so they're left with >3 year cars.

And if somebody gives up on a FMBSH then do they lose them and the car for good so diminishing the market for service customers even more?

And from MB's point of view does a resulting reduction in the number of cars that qualify for Mobilo assistance put their costs per customer up? (Though that could be offset by the reduced rust warranty liabilities).
