The top gear polar special was in hd...fantastic!

The point being that everyone is able to access BBC HD, via Sky HD or Freesat with a satellite dish and suitable receiving boxes. Because you cannot put up a satellite dish hardly makes it a pointless service from the BBC.

er... no, I apologise for not being clearer.

What I was alluding to is that BBC1 and BBC2 are the two primary BBC channels & neither of which are broadcast in HD. Whilst I agree there are other BBC HD channels, Top Gear is broadcast on BBC2.

The BBC HD channel just tends to broadcast what is popular that it has in HD - so if Heroes is on, then they show that for example. It tends to be from any channel, rather than just one.

Hopefully, as time goes on, they'll develop a HD alternative for each individual channel to widen the variety.
