Am i right in thinking you can top up the auto box through the dipstick tube?

You are correct.

The procedure, at least on a 190E according to an autobxo specialist, is as follows:

Take it out for a run, get it all up to normal operating temp and be sure every gear has been used (including reverse).

Park it on level ground, keep the engine running and pop the bonnet up.

Check the level, it should be up to the upper mark on the dipstick. There may be some splattering above this, but you can tell the difference between the level and spatters on the stick.

Top it up a little bit at a time through the dipstick tube. The tube is very long and kinked, so I'm topping mine up a little at a time over several days to make sure I don't overfill.

The 190E auto boxes do seem to get clunky - mine is a 2.6 with 112k, its clunky on the upshift, but topping up the fluid has helped a bit.

Thanks Robby. Il do just that. :)

Oh and whats the best ATF fluid to use? I realy do need to get a Haynes!!!
