Where do i find the pipe for topping up my gearbox oil. It is running low as there is a leak but the next available slot at my garage is not until thursday and i need to use my car so i was going to top up the oil until then.

Can i pour some new oil in via a filler pipe under the bonnet similar to topping up the engine oil or does it have to go directly into the box from underneath the car?

Any replies as soon as possible would be appreciated as im hoping to be able to use the car tonight.

Cheers

You fill using the tube in the engine compartment.

But I don't think it's a good idea just throwing some in if you don't have a dipstick and know the correct procedure for measuring the depth.

The gearbox is filled through the the dip stick tube. But be very careful you don't overfill it as this can cause serious damage to the gearbox.

I know its low enough that the gear changes are loosing there smoothness and there is a growing patch of small drops appearing on the drive so i just wanted to chuck maybe half a litre or something in so that my box isnt running entirely empty.

Which pipe do i use under the bonnet?

Iv taken a pic of the engine bay and will post this up if you need unless you already know which pipe.

The one at the back of the engine, as opposed to the engine dipstick tube. Post the pic. to make sure.

Heres the pic. Is it the red or black one or is it somewhere else

Ah, got me.

The black one is certainly for the dipstick, and on my car that's the only one.

Anyone else??

I think after reading on another site that the black one is for the gearbox as it should have a red locking tab on it and "mb workshop only" or something so i reckon that should be it.

If not im heading up a hell of a creek without any means of propulsion lol.

Honestly , if you can't dip it , and don't know the dipping procedure , i wouldn't do it. You can't just guess how much it needs.

IIRC you fill it via the black one on the left. You really need to take it to a specialist.

The box in your car leaks around what is known as the pivot bush.

In Dundee you have really only the choice of John R Weir or taking it down to a specialist in Glasgow (mercedes specialist in Ibrox have a good name)

Theres also Motor Technology that i found in dundee but as the gearbox was supposedly meant to have been fixed at the honda garage i got the car from (i had a 6 month warranty with them on the car) so they were meant to have sorted back at the end of april. The car was under warranty until the end of april and now it is leaking again but is out of warranty.

I should be able to get it sorted free though as they were meant to have fixed it under the warranty and obviously havent so they need to rectify the work they have carried out.

Until thursday im just going to have to bite the bullet and drive it as my car is essential use during the week. Its my own fault if i chew up the box because its out of oil. It must still have plenty of oil as it changes ok-ish, is still dripping very slowly onto the drive and i havent had any warning on the display about it.
