I'm considering having an ecu remap but I'm concerned about the effects on the transmission of my '55 plate E320cdi S211. Can anybody point me in the right direction with regard to the torque capability of this gearbox?
Thanks

Your gearbox is fitted on the E63. Just make sure they map the gearbox as well as your engine.

That would be like making a cheque more impressive by adding zeros after the decimal point. What he needs to know is whether or not the cogs will shatter or the slip-rings burn out.

If its the same gearbox on a 6.2litres 500-odd bhp V8 with 460-ish ft lbs of torque, doesn't that explain if 'the cogs will shatter or slip-rings burning out'?

Or am i being obtuse?

I think you are being bang on.

Thanks for your input gents. I wasn't sure if the internals of my box were same as the E63 or even rated for the same torque. I'm pretty sure that on other models with differing engine types/sizes (not necessarily E class) Merc will fit what appears to be the same gearbox but with different internals....or am I just being a pussy and should just get on and have it done?:o

I know a chap who had his E320cdi chipped to 240-odd bhp and he was very impressed with no complaints to date.

Normally they wouldn't be, but in this case they are. Both are built for 700Nm (520ft-lbs).
What is the engine output now and what will it be.?

What can the rest of the engine handle thought. Does a remap not increase injector wear, alter turbo boost pressure. + there is the issue of your insurance etc?

A new 7g-tronic is £3,500 if that helps? I understood that MB fitted different internals. For instance even the A class gets the 7g-tronic.

The E63 has an additional planetary gear. Im afraid that looking at numbers does not underscore the vast differences. You really need to speak to someone who can look at the gerbox designation.

e.g. My 722.6 gearbox is perhaps 722.615 and the C200 is 722.645 as made up numbers. The engines are VERY similar. The gearboxes are very different. Then comes the C230 which is then totally different again with a different torque converter.

Let's not trivialise this with piston counts. The gearboxes are in several categories.

- AMG
- V8
- V6
- 4 pot.
- Diesel variants

Then you also have the differentials and torque converters. Lets get down to specifics and not indulge in "looks the same".

That much I am certain of.

The A-Class has a constantly variable transmission. The gear ratios are just preset "numbers" between the infinitely variable velocity drums.

In Australia mapped engines have no insurance upon incident.

As already said both boxes in question are built to handle 700Nm. Diesels nearly always have stronger boxes due to the increased torque.

Hi Dieselman
The engine is 540Nm and 224HP and they are claim an increase to 613Nm and 265HP

Are the differentials, torque converters and planetary gears the same ? Are the designations the same (3 digit suffix) ?

These numbers are not related to the power curve either. Where does the torque peak for an AMG.
