Hi, last thurs my gear box problem re-appeared (sticking in 2nd) after accelerating from roundabout on a dual carriage way. In order to get off road quickly as i could see van/cars in my RVM approaching my rear very quickly, i pulled into an un-official lay-by ( had seen cars and vans parked there all the time) and hit a pothole at approx 20 mph. Heard loud bang but all appeared ok. today, i heard this knocking noise (only because i had no music on) from N/S. Took wheel off and there it was the torsion bar broken, s**t, i thought, more money leaving my wallet. As the photo shows, there seems to be alot of corrosion evident which may have weakened the torsion bar and contributed to the fracture. My questions are:

    1. Is it a DIY job? (i have no ramp facilities)
    2. Is the item expensive?
    3. If garage fixes it, is a long job (labour costly)

    4. If i attempt it, do i need special tools, and what should i look out for?

    Appreciate any help and advice.

PS is it safe to carry on driving whilst in this condition?

Antiroll bar. Nice rust inside the bush!

The rubber bushes wear away the powder coating on the bar allowing them to rust

torrsion bars are reasonable to do i have done a few in my time lowering and replacing the first time is always a bit harder to do than the next time price on the torrsion bars can vary in price it is worth checking online for the price kmsparts.co.uk i have found to be very cheap for parts garage labour they have ramps and will be able to do it in half an hour but bill you for 2-4 hours as they do special tools required socket set a slide hammer would help but i found a hammer and a metal chisel works

Hi Dave, MOT was carried out in Mar, i think the corrosion may have been difficult to see as it was buried within the bush.
