I read that the tourist mode setting on the 2010 E Class Saloon can be set by pressing a combination of buttons on the steering wheel. Is this true? I thought the switch over had to be done at a dealers on a laptop.

I guess your dealer told this and then they charge you from pressing a sequence of steering wheel buttons.

By the way, you don't have to press buttons blindly, just follow the settings menus at the cluster computer and you will find the tourist mode well explained.

When ever the question is about how to use the car, the user manual is a miracle, it mostly explains how the car can be operated. ;)

A warm welcome to this forum.

Unfortunately not so! I bought my car new in Jan 2010 and the manual says the change to/from tourist mode has to be done by a dealer. The latest manual on the internet does say that it can be done via the 'Lights' sub-menu by changing the dipped headlight setting but that option does not appear on my sub-menu.

Well, you do not say which lights you have, this menu option should appear for Xenons only (if I remember right).

I think so - AFIK automatic Euro/UK setting is only possible with Xenon HID's.

Thanks chaps! Yes I have the Xenon Intelligent Light System so I'm surprised that it isn't available on my car. Perhaps a software upgrade is required? I will take it to my local MB dealer and seek advice. I have recently brought the car back from the continent where the lights were set to tourist mode (flat Xenon beam) by a German MB Dealer.

This does sound strange. I would have expected there was no mechanical lever to put ILS xenons to tourist mode. Hopefully you get this solved smoothly and report us what it was about.

Was the car on a longer stay in Germany? Perhaps the cluster menu was disabled to avoid people disabling tourist mode when they are no tourists (just the car was).

From the WIS doc.

"In model 207 and model 212 up to 30.11.09 (YoM 09/2) with bi-xenon headlamps, the headlamps are adjusted electronically using using Star Diagnosis.

In model 207 and model 212 as of 1.12.09 (YoM 09/2) with bi-xenon headlamps, the headlamps are adjusted on the onboard computer using the instrument cluster."

So very much depends on when exactly the car was made..

I have recently bought a 2009 e class coupe (207?) manufactured pre 30.11.09. Is the star diagnosis a one off where the new menu is downloaded or do you have to visit the dealer before and after each change?

2009 e class coupe is a 207 model. AFAIK the lights will need changing via STAR each time.
