A class amg
Hi all I've got a 2015 amg 2.1 night edition a class.
I've been searching for a towbar for a while now even phoned up Mercedes direct and they dont make one for my style.they say the engine isn't powerful enough..
My question are all the chassis types the same on that year.will it actually fit.dont mind modifying bumper slightly.its only for a towbar bike rack.
Any info regarding this would be great.
Luke

Check the V5
It will show the towing capacity if the car has been "type approved" for towing.
If it isn't type approved the fitting of any tow bar is illegal.
If it is type approved then you could look at towbars for other A Class models to see if they could become a legal fit

Hi thanks for the quick reply.
Its says
Technical permissible max towing mass of trailer
Braked 1500
Unbraked 740
Type approval number is e1
Any of this make sense.

It's what the VIN plate says that matters, so I would check that to be sure (V5s have been known to be wrong). If there's a 'gross train weight' (the maximum allowed weight for car plus trailer) then you are good. This is usually the second figure down, and it will be blank/zero/"--"/etc. if the car isn't type-approved for towing. As Piff said if it's not type-approved it's illegal to fit a towbar, even if you only put a bike rack on it.

I'm sorry I have not got a clue what I'm looking at.long day.

Your V5 above shows clearly the car can tow so no need to worry about type approval.
I’m surprised Mercedes say it isn’t powerful enough for towing as my 2.1 CLS tows my Coachman 520/4 with the same ease as my previous Jaguar XF 3.0 diesel.
I can recommend PF Jones for tow bar supplies and fitting nowadays is relatively easy if you know what you’re doing otherwise contact a tow bar fitting specialist. I find MB main dealers are not really that interested in doing this type of work.
Good luck

To be sure you need to look at the data plate on the car itself.

Indeed. This site Maximum Towing Weight has a good write up, with pictures, on what you are looking for. MB normally put this data plate (actually a sticker) on the driver's side B pillar, i.e. open the driver's door and you will see it on the pillar.

Martin.

Yup I have seen a few errors on V5s over the years, and the Police / DVSA (previously VOSA) will always go by the plate on the vehicle.

Hi all thanks for the replies.
I phoned Mercedes up today and they said I think a towbar fitted is about 5 grand,to which I laughed.
And because my model is amg the German way of thinking is AMGs are to good to tow with so they dont make them.gutted.
I phoned up pf Jones as said and they said they dont do them for my variant as the cut would be massive in the bumper.
So I googled pics to see and it pointed me to towbars uk.
Which do sell them for amg models and the cut would be very small.
After giving my reg they was very helpful in giving all the info and the towing weights.1500kg braked.
And as it's not the amg engine only body kit all is good.

Brink make a ‘tow bar’ exclusively for cycle carriers .

By design a trailer cannot be hitched .

This is legal on cars with no towing capacity.

Bike carrier towbar - A towbar to transport your bikes.

That's interesting, but this sounds a bit odd:

All Brink bike carrier solutions have been developed in such a way that they can handle the maximum vertical axle load, called nose weight, of your car.

Cars that aren't intended to tow won't have a nose weight limit defined, and this isn't based simply on axle loading anyway.
