With a Yeti on order, I have been wondering whether it would be feasible to use it to tow my X1/9 should the need arise. The Yeti has a braked towing capacity of 1.2 tonnes, while the X1/9 weighs just under a tonne.
I don't have room to store a flatbed trailer, and in any case I presume the combined weight would then exceed 1.2 tonnes. However, I do have room to store a dolly, but from what I've read, these are only meant to be used for the recovery of broken down vehicles, and not for transporting a car from one location to another. Is this a hard-and-fast rule, or just advisory?
The other compact option seems to be an A-frame, which attaches rigidly to the front of the car that's being towed such that the whole unit is classed as a trailer, and must therefore be braked to at least 50% of the efficiency attained by the towing car. How would this be achieved, given that only the rear wheels of the towed car would be in contact with the road?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
