TPM Exipry date

I have the Tyre Pressure Monitors on my car and I've been told by the dealer that they expire ( I do currently have a TPM fault on the car but I've had it a while and never bothered getting it seen). He showed me the date printed on it but since that appeared to be a manufacture date I was a bit sceptical.

However a little digging on this site seems to suggest he was correct.

So what is the lifespan of these units (I have a 2003 E320 CDI Estate)?

Should they (or the valves) be replaced as part of a normal service or when the tyres are changed? :dk:

If one seems to have failed should all be changed at the same time to avoid sequential failure? :dk:

Any idea how much these things cost and if they can be bought cheaply from an Indi?

I believe they last about 5yrs, it's the none replaceable battery that kills them. Once one has gone it's a fair bet the rest will go quite quickly.

They don't need to be replaced at each tyre change but quite often the units are damaged during the removal/fitting of the tyre.

I think they are approx £60 - £80 each.

OUCH!

I need to boost my bank balance and income considerably if I intend to keep this car I think.

Many drivers allow the sensors to die and then ignore them. You might be able to have the cluster alert disabled by the dealer
