Car went in today (dealer) to check tracking free of charge due to the fact i bought it last week, its drifting slightly to the left if i let go of the wheel, and when i hold the wheel to go in a straight line the steering wheel is slightly off center clockwise:confused: (22,000mls). The sales person said Mercedes are designed to veer slight to the left away from oncoming traffic (Duh!), I'm taking it to Merc of Worcester and go for a spin with a technician to get a 2ND opinion.

If you're on completely level ground (no camber) it should go in a straight line. If its on a slight camber it will go left.

Take it onto a big car park, see what it does.

It does it on any road, but will take note when in a car park.

That is a classic car salesmans lie. If it was true then it would mean that native Mercs would veer into oncoming traffic. He is trying to feed you Bu!! $h!t, pure and simple.

The veer to the left could be road camber, a sticking brake caliper, low tyre pressure or incorrect tracking.

Sort of yes an no. The cars are setup with different suspension geometry settings on both sides of the car, although it is possible to make them drive straight.

Get a printout of the settings and you should see any out of tollerance as denoted by an asterisk, although the settings could well be in and still pulling.

It's probably the rear setup causing the drifting as a small allowance can have a marked effect.

Strange it should be going into MB Worcester, my own car pulled quite hard when I got it and they had it back to no avail. It's all sorted now though, it was a mixture of rear toe and front caster that was out.

I bought the car from Mercedes of Swindon, near where i used to live so i new the sales man for a while besides hes the only one who could be bothered to find the car i specked up out of 4! dealers, now that I'm 60mils away from Swindon and 8 from Worcester it makes sense to go there for a second opinion,

im off to the dealer now! post laters:rock:

This is absolutely true, I had a car recently that came with a letter from Milton keynes to say this was true (stops car going into oncomming traffic if driver falls asleep) as the owner thought he was being fed cr*p by the dealer too..

It seems silly but most 90's mercs ive had have always had this characteristic...

Of course any good garage should be able to set it dead on if thats what you want.

I've told this story before, but when I test drove my C270 it drifted left and the salesman said 'it's supposed to do that'. He took me to a dual carriageway where the right lane was cambered to the right, and sure enough the car drifted right.

I do find it quite annoying on my car - on the motorway I have to hold the car to the right - but as the tyres are wearing evenly and you hear horror stories about alignment, I've decided to leave it alone.

I've read they can be set up to be less camber sensitive but that has other implications.

Well i guess I'm going round in circles, went out with technician and he said the same thing, even moved over to right hand lane to prove to me that it will drift to the right which it did! it doesn't pull to the left but drifts slightly, there is a difference.

The solution must be to drive in the middle of the road!

Are any of these guys near you: http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk./trusted.htm ? Don't know anything about them, but they sound like they know what they're talking about!
