I didn't even know any attempt was being made.

Elvington is used for all sorts of speed record attempts (wheelchairs, milk floats, tractors, etc.) so it might have been something quite obscure rather than an outright speed run. I don't think there are any details at the moment. Very sad, whatever was being attempted.

I just heard that it might have been a guy called Zak Eisenberg who owned a fitness company.
Possibly a bike speed record being attempted.

Seems he was driving a Porsche 911 Turbo S modified to 1200 bhp, which had previously hit 239.7 mph at Vmax:
