Hi all, having probs working this one out Sl280 Import on a 1999 plate but with a Straight 6 not v6. My father brought the car from a merc dealership back in 2004 and the gearbox use to clonk dont know which gears think it was from first to second? So because of warranty they kept the car for 2 weeks and said they replaced the trany???? got a reciept for £7000 thou of a new trani. Now I have got my hands on the car yippie:bannana: as my dad didnt drive it much the car is in good condition but when i used kick down all i would hear is pop pop pop then a clonk then a gear change? I have changed the oil 2day it changes gear better but still the poppin. sometimes it will pop in first to second gear changes? when the trani was changed the car had 36Ks on it, now its only 50K any help?

First you need to establish which gearbox you have. If you key your VIN (Chassis no) into the box on this site it should give you all the build details of your car. http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/view.html?lng=eng If its one of the old 4 speed boxes it may just need the pressure control cable adjusting or perhaps the vacuum side checked OR---- the problem may be more serious. Come back with the gearbox number first and you may get more feedback?

Gearbox number is 722604 00 094361 the car was imported from Thailand and delivery date was 14.01.97

I'm thinking driveshaft or diff noise and not gearbox at all.

It only happens when using kickdown and between first and second gear so can only be gearbox im waiting for my new laptop so i can use my diagnotic equipment on her!;)

I'm still not convinced. Kickdown between first and second will be more severe than any other gear and in a little 280 it may well only make the noise in lower gears if the changes are particularly harsh.

My manual W124 has a clonking noise, mostly between 1st and 2nd. Its been there for years and I can assure you that it is coming from the diff on my car and not the gearbox. Its quite common on manual MB's apparently as the diff was designed with smooth changing auto's in mind.

All I am saying is that I wouldn't rule it out. Its a simple task to get under the car and turn the driveshaft while in neutral to see how much play there is in your diff.
