124 300D 24V Estate
After 2 years plus and some 27K miles of faultless service - I found I had an itch involving a turbo and some creature comforts. After much yapping with Ian Walker, ***, Dieselman, Ringway, Aandyy and other forum members I decided to get scratching.

A buyer hove into view for my 124 300D Estate and we agreed a price at the same time I spied this on ebay.

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

Cost to change less than 500 squid.

So what do I think of the 210?

I thought initially that the boot space was smaller. It's not, the windows start higher up the bodyline making it appear smaller, it is about four inches wider and longer than the 124 cargo area.
Rear leg room is far better.
The 210 has a "Matalan" interior (cloth, to them as don't know) My estate was leather - Not missing the leather yet.
Drivers seat. Initially could not get it "right" for me at all. Settled into it now though
The roof line is lower in the 210 when you are sat in it, so it seems not as "airy"
Power steering is bliss compared to the 124.
Loving the cruise control and speed limiter.
Standard stereo set up is far better. But a previous owner has put a Sony single slot CD radio in instead of (I guess) the Mercedes Radio/Tape Player (Ill get over it)
The engine and turbo - Sold. Epic (as *** would say) after the 124.
Things wrong on pick up. Bit rattley over bumps at the front end. New (Mercedes) ARB's and Drop Links sorted that.
The cross member under the engine is rotten (no surprise there) New bit to come from Merc, 33 squid or thereabouts.
There is a leak from the oil cooler - minor and not to worry about.
Bit of welding required on the off side rear compartment under where the first aid kit is kept (No surprise there)
It needed a top up of the gearbox fluid.
Engine oil light message popped up after about a week of ownership. Topped up - No Worries.
Headlight glass was very "stained" Brasso is sorting that out (Thanks for the tip Corned and Aandyy)
It came with 12 months MoT and a recent service (by the previous owner)
Have not done a "click to click" MPG check yet but it appears to use the same amount of fuel as the 124.

What do I miss.

In the 124 - I used to get a lot of "looks" and total strangers used to engage me in conversation about 124's. "Lovely old things" was what they used to say. How many miles? All that sort of stuff.

Its growing on me. And right now its off to Wales being piloted by our son with his family on board for a weeks camping towing the tiniest camping trailer I have every seen. He has left his Focus TDCI with me!!

I still have my 124 Saloon and a 124 Coupe 24v knocking around so I have not left the 124 fold yet.

Have a great time this Bank Holiday Weekend or indeed, if you are working, enjoy it the best you can.

:thumb:Big Thanks to Ian Walker and the boys at TMS without which my motor pleasure would be somewhat demised.

CHEERS.

Hi Trapper
Enjoy your new car!
Im a cloth fan so sounds good to me

I think secretly everyone is a cloth fan, but UK protocol dictates we "must have" leather.

Apparently other countries residents don't have this culture.

It depends on the cloth and the leather. Give me Connolly any day over modern dinosaur skin, and I'd rather have velour or Russell cord than that.

The W210 is a much under-rated car. I'm thoroughly enjoying mine.

You would love my old crocks, super comfy seats covered in deep pile velour.

Once I have cleaned the "Matalan" interior in mine. Ill put a picture of it up. I think the colour of the interior is great - if totally impracticable.

Criky Dieselman that interior is awful. Is that a 405?

I actually prefer the interior of the W124 than W210. Actually the exterior too, but I think the look of the W210 is coming back to me.

I really liked the Alcantara/artico trim that was in our old ML300. It was comfortable and practical.

Hi John
Welcome to the W210 club.
Great cars.
I'm sure you'll get to love it.

Cloth ... leather ... It doesn't really bother me.
Mrs J's E430 has leather.
My silver E300TD is cloth.

Enjoy the car.

Looks like a BX to me, check the front quarter light...

Looks very well John. Look forward to seeing it at the next GTG.:thumb:

I had a XM SEi as a company car in 1990. Fantastic car. I'd have another today if it wasn't for the niggling faults some of which the garage never got to the bottom of. Still it never let failed to start in the 2 years and 60K plus miles. It was a world away from the Carlton it replaced. That was boring, but did the job. Previous to that was an Audi 100CC 1.8. It would have been perfect if I could have stretched to the CD model with the 5 cylinder engine.

I got loads of stick for choosing XM rather than something more mundane. Not even telling them it was Car of The Year made any difference.

John, there is a sony head unit and 10 disc changer sat on the shelf in my garage... if you want it to upgrade your single cd feel free... the cable however is still in the SL... but if you can be bothered it is yours... :)

Looks like a nice car John :)

I did a similar upgrade last year - my trusty old 300TE, although still perfectly usable was getting tired - and the price to upgrade was more benficial to me than spending out on ongoing servicing/repairs.

The new E320 W210 (1999/facelift) has been great so far - and only cost around £100 or so in servicing/repairs over the last year.

Other than the rust, these are generally very good cars - even if they don't have quite the same character as the old ones :o

So now the cleaning starts. This is it in its new lair.

Looks good, John, enjoy - just so long as you keep your feet in the 124 camp!
