B200 cdi 2.0 turbo
Hi Guys, hope you can help i recently had a wobble on the front of my b200 cdi 07 plate car and after investigation i later found that one of my cv boots was leaking oil on the left inner cv which the garage failed to tighten on properly. You don't notice these things until you see grease on the wheel. So i took it back to the garage and they refitted the the cv boot with a better clip. However 2 weeks have passed since then and i was advised the the drive shaft that could of run dry needed to be replaced which i got done..no more wobble until ive noticed in the last few days the automatic gearbox seems to not run into gear as well as it did, Also when i put the car in reverse it sort of shunts back rather than engage correctly then today the car would not go past 40 as if it was in safe mode. I stopped the car and restarted it then a warning appeared on dashboard saying " transmission failure please visit work shop" I'm a little confused because the car started driving ok without a limp being present. Could this be the drive shaft that's just been put in not engaging correctly or could it be gearbox or gearbox oil? As much as the car has been a great workhorse I'm tired of spending on it with idiot mechanics doing crap work.

Any ideas would be perfect please.

Regardz
Michael

Has the transmission fluid level been checked? I wonder if the garage drained/lost some fluid when they removed the drive shaft and forgot to replace it.

Hi Stratman, thanks for the reply to be honest i was walking towards the car in the garage when i noticed the mechanic has a pipe coming up to what i presume was gearbox oil. It did not look like a mb gearbox oil as he said I'm just putting this oil in but i would of presumed they dont stock mb oil or bought any in to do thework. To be honest i don't know if he put too much in or not enough :( all i know the car is running rubbish and if it has issues i just pull over turn engine off then back on then it seems to run ok ish.....

MB transmissions are very fussy about transmission fluid, including type and amount. It must be MB specification, which isn't the same as 'off the shelf universal fluid', and it must be the correct level. Too much is as bad as too little.

Find a good MB indy who will check and change the fluid if required. Get it done sooner rather than later as the wrong stuff can damage the internals.

Is the transmission failure message intermittent or permanent? Does the message go away when you start the car and then come up later while you are driving or does it comes up straight away?

Your car probably has the CVT transmission... They are not the most reliable thing out there

Of course an automatic W245 has a CVT.
It does require extra attention, and needs to be looked after properly - reliability issues mostly due to neglect or garages' mistakes.

Hi Wongl, ive not driven the car enough to know yet but .All i know is the error message came on, and car was in limp mode. I pulled the car to the side of the road waited 5 mins started car again ( no warning message ) and car was no longer in limp. So i guess its not a permanent message wongl.

Would a new drive shaft being fitted wrong and the wrong gearbox oil cause these issues. The car seems to go in the garage to get fixed then cones out with new issues. They are certainly testing my patience atm and they won't be a able to fix a my fuse once i blow as its certainly coming to that :(

CVT is rubbish by design....they break and Will break , just look how many w126 w245 fir sale with knackered boxes... They can not handle the torque....

This thread is not about how rubbish they are or how many are for sale its the communication with knowledgeable members who can help solve issues which is what I've asked for. Keep your stats to yourself if possible as I'm looking for a solution to a problem not a stat dedicated post.

Cheers

That is for you to organise - and you should. There are so many inconsistencies in your opening post you really do need a garage that you can hand the car over to knowing they actually understand the car and know what they are doing with it.

Graeme answered this far better, than I ever could :)
I wish I knew more about mechanical side of things ... however, if you later decide to upgrade lights, head unit, or retrofit illuminated sills or footwell lights, etc, etc - I'd be happy to share my experience: there's not much left in my car in this department I haven't yet messed with ... errrm ... I mean modified  W169 and W245 share most of the parts and systems, apart from body shell and steering wheel, which W245 got from W164.

Very nice way to make a start in the forum...you sound a very polite person.

Cheers anyway... And good luck with your excellent CVT....

I am polite and thank you pointing that out. I appreciate your comment of course i do but my head is battered with mechanics that cause more problems with no knowledge unfortunately which is why we turn to specialist forums for back up. Its lessons I'm learning about mercs, and thank you for the heads up about crappy cvt boxes. :)

Apologies if I over reacted.
I must admit its frustrating to deal with certain garages
My last piece of advice is to see a transmission specialist who knows these CVT boxes.
Good luck with it

W169..... Not good with my new phone keyboard....
