Transmission Fluid

If the tranny filter isnt pushed fully home into the valve block then the transmission pump will not be able to draw atf from the sump and will suck air instead, that is why 'overfilling' the transmission (as you did) overcame the problem (to some extent) of having no drive.
Check out this video at 3 minutes into the video you will see the correct instalation of the filter.
You mechanic needs to drop the sump and re-check the filter.... the point being that the transmission was working ok before the fluid and filter change (according to your earlier post)

No point in pursuing other routes until the filter is checked!

^as above. You might have the wrong fluid in there. If that's the case, get it drained and refiled with the correct fluid immediately.
 
im not an expert but Surely the first thing to do would be to check the level using a diptick observing the correct temperature and cycling thro the gears first.
