I think I may have averted a disaster with my transmission, lost forward drive a few days ago and thought my gearbox was shot, managed to get car home and started to find out prices for repairs or a second hand unit.
I rang a mate of mine who runs a company who does auto box re-builds called Autotrans in Chester, after explaining to him the symptoms, he assured me it was only a low fluid problem and to check it.
Well as it turned out, I wasn't checking the fluid properly to start with, I thought it was just like checking engine oil with dipstick, wrong, after finding out the correct way to check it, I ended up adding 1 1/2 litres of fluid to get the level correct, and as luck would have it all the gears came back, thank god.
So on after a test drive there were some horrible scraping noises and it slips in starter gear but everything else is working brilliant, kick-down, changing up and down, and reverse, scraping noise iv'e since found out is the centre prop shaft bearing has gone, one winging it's way to me as we speak.
after a lot of forums searching, American, (we Brits don't touch trannies), it is maybe a problem with the B2 brake band piston sticking or broken which causes slipping and flaring in the low gears, B1 controls the high gears.
So here is my problem, trying to source a new piston if I need one is proving to be a nightmare, at the moment the car is drivable with gentle acceleration till it starts rolling then once moving its fine, I don't want to have the piston out to check in case its one of the old plastic pistons and is broke, that renders my car off the road, on the other hand, being a 1994 model, it should have the updated modified metal piston with plastic liner bush which was done sine 94 onwards, if so good, change oil and filter and should it be ok, if the B2 brake band itself is broken, then it's gearbox out time to repair that.
Why is it the part number I have for the replacement piston is not recognised by any parts sites, A201 270 04 32 this is the new superseded part been fitted since 94 that I hope is in mine, I emailed the main MB dealer for a quote to supply one and after he gave me the correct number said it would be £103.00ish but were out of stock in the UK and Germany, I have sourced one in the USA at $175.00 + pp + duties etc, expensive, Russian sites are worse, I have done a used part search with a couple of used parts dismantlers sites, but had no replies, so it looks like I cant get a replacement piston at all that's why I don't want to check mine until I know I can get another.
Unless of course someone on here has a scrap box with one in.
My transmission No is 722.431
