Scotland's beleaguered Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson has resigned over his handling of the travel chaos caused by the extreme winter weather.

I wonder if his London counterpart is any better? He has rejected pleas to "encourage" the use of winter tyres during the coldest part of the year because "they would damage the roads and create potholes!"

If this is the calibre of the UK's transport secretary/ministers, no wonder the roads systems are in chaos whenever we get any snow.

Sacrificial lamb to a Scottish Government that refuses to take any responsibility for itself in order to save it's face in the media.

While Stewart Stevenson does not come across as the "sharpest tool in the box" its perhaps a little unfair to blame him for a heavy fall of snow in Central Scotland. While the media chattering classes worked themselves into a frenzy to apportion blame for a naturally occurring event - [why not blame God??] and cornered the unfortunate minister by playing recordings to him of the previous night's somewhat damning weather forecast which accurately predicted the snowfall, it does of course raise the question that this warning of bad road conditions was of course also available to all the motorists who got stranded the next day! A previous week of established weather patterns of heavy snow coming straight for Scotland across the North sea from Siberia? December in Scotland ------a forecast of SNOW----- who would have guessed that would happen ?
Such was the level and duration of the snow precipitation that its likely that the only effective response to Scotland's ineffectively shod vehicle fleet would have been to suspend movement on the effected roads temporarily. He would then have been accused of over reacting ----damned if you do damned if you don't ! Stewart Stevenson - a man in the wrong place at the wrong time-- thousands of motorists in Scotland on Monday/Tuesday know what that feels like.

I think the SNP government are under pressure from all sides, hopefully good riddance after next year's elections :thumb:

I thought the Transport Minister Philip Hammond's comments that winter tyres would cause potholes in our roads kinda sums up most politicians performance these days.

I was more amused by the whole "clear it yourself" debacle from the British minister.

There are so many things wrong with that, but even if I were so inclined (which I am not averse to from a purely selfish I want to drive point of view) where is my free shovel and where is my grit. And not to mention where is my council tax discount!

He deserved to go, not for the chaos but for his blindingly crass remarks after the event. What a dyckhead. Reminds me of that ginger topped character in the Muppets. (As does Danny Alexander actually)

Good riddance to be replaced with what? Another bunch of same old same old in the numpty department.

Abolishing the whole executive (oh yeah, they think they're a government?) would be good riddance.

It's just such a shame that people who actually know about stuff and real life will never be in power.

This is a cruel cruel world.
