We're off to Italy on Saturday, for a much looked forward to bit of slope sliding in the Dolomites.
So with the increasing opportunity to get some free Coronvirus I thought let's have a read up on the RBS Platinum cover associated to the bank account.
Cover this, cover that, only off piste with guide, blah de wotsit.

'Missed departure due to vehicle breakdown'. If it's your own vehicle it must be serviced as per manufacturers recommend. Well it is, but as many it's self serviced.
So the relevant question is w/o service stamp or garage receipt do the insurance have a let out?
Are a great many of us vulnerable in this scenario?

Without records from a garage it's your word against theirs. That said, if it is something that has no relevance with self-service (puncture for example, or the spontaneous failure of an electrical system) then it shouldn't matter, although they would doubtless try to claim otherwise.

Yes this is typical of all insurance companies nowadays they look at “Anything” to use as an excuse to get out of a claim.

I don’t see the problem if you have some receipts to support the story that you’ve serviced it.

I wonder if they would use terms such as 'qualified' mechanic, or 'authorised' service specialist.

I don't either - it doesn't, as say, an extended warranty would do, specify that it must be a VAT registered garage.

The area of missed departure travel insurance cover that always troubles me is getting stuck in a jam - then the insurance company want proof of the cause and I always imagine that would be hard to obtain. Both of the last two trips I've made to Manchester airport I've had to come off the M56 and go around the back of Altrincham - thankfully the sat nav in my car faithfully guided me. But if I'd not been able to get off the motorway, I'd have been stuffed.

I'd be more worried about being let back in after being in Italy given the virus, and parking costs at the airport if you over stay? I love the Dolomites so very jealous - my favourite place on earth of those i've been to. Epic cycling country on a road bike. I love/hate the descent off the Fedaia Pass in equal measure as the runout is just so fast. My courage runs out at 90km/hr!
