Trip to Germany

I have lots more on my camera which I will post up later.
Need to resize them first.

Also got some snaps of our private parking at the hotel.
Parking which takes on a whole new meaning of "private"!

Stay tuned.

I forgot to mention the dreaded train journey! lol

So, my fears were that I would destroy each and every wheel on the train

We arrived at the tunnel (UK side).
Colin was leading, I was behind Colin and the others were behind us.
Colin stopped at the first booth and informed the guy (let's call him Gweedo) that he needed the bigger carriage because he had wide wheel tracks. This was perhaps true for the 2 Black Series cars but I was going to run with that story too!
There was no way I was destroying my wheels and I was pretty sure that Gweedo wasn't going to break out a tape measure.

Colin got through and was granted the wider carriage.

I approached Gweedo and explained that the train would destroy my wheels and that I needed the wider carriage.

Gweedo was not so quick to help this time.
He said that he couldn't let us all on otherwise he would have to turn down people that needed the extra height (caravans etc).

He allowed me and Colin on, but had to send the others to the normal carriage.

I was relieved to get on the wider carriage, but genuinely felt for the others. :(

The wider carriage was bliss.
At least a foot either side.

We enjoyed chats and donuts throughout the outbound journey.

The return journey was not as relaxing.
We were late.
It was howling with rain.
Biblical queues.
Chaos, confusion.
On top of this, 3 of us were running on fumes.
Reserve fuel had flashed up on the dash
I have never let my car run down that low on fuel and I had no idea how long the car would take to slurp up the last of the fuel.

We were no dealing with frenchies this time too

Colin broke through and had secured a larger carriage.
I explained to Gweedo's French counterpart that I needed the wider carriage.
He was not keen to help.
I insisted that I needed the wider carriage.
Spent a good few minutes drowning him in OCD insistence.
He said he'd have to call it in.
Thankfully he let me and the others on the wider carriage.

The Don took a picture of the clearance on the normal carriage while on the outbound train.. the clearance is truly shocking!
I think the only thing that saved him from destroying his wheels was the fact that his brother was able to jump out and guide him down the carriage!

Many thanks the write ups and photo's. Very envious, sorry I had to pull out.

Next time.

No worries, Pete.
It certainly was a shame that you couldn't make it :(
But I am keen to make this a regular yearly trip at least.
Not necessarily to Germany each time, but certainly somewhere.

I will post up more pics soon.

MODS:

Is there any chance that we can have the ability to post up more pictures rather than to have to start deleting old ones?
I don't use photophucket and I may need more data allowance...

good to hear that you all had a great time.

did AMG charge you anything for diagnosing the fault?

Fuel quality.

One of my concerns for the trip was the quality of fuel.

The truth of it was that we really couldn't be too fussy - not knowing when the next services would come along.
But we were able to fill up with 97+ ron at each station.

We did manage to get hold of some V-Power Racing 100 at the Shell garages.

Colin was joking, saying that there was not noticeable difference.
But I have to say, I thought the car felt different with it.
Sharper throttle response and the exhaust note was louder.

Placebo?

Maybe.
But I thought there was a difference.

How many tanks?
Can't recall exactly, but I think we filled up around 6-7 times in total.
Not from empty tanks, but from tanks with around a quarter or a third left in them.

Apart from the last fuel stop in Folkestone on the way home.
Colin believed that we had plenty of fuel on the way to Calais.
We even passed a station on the way there.
Reserve fuel flashed up on the dash.
Admittedly, I did not like this and became very uneasy.

Got off the train in Folkestone with 16 miles of fuel left in the tank.

Ok, Colin was right, but that was certainly cutting it fine!

Sean!
How you doing, bud!

Yes, the trip was good.
Shame you didn't join us :(
It was nice to finally take the car for a worthy trip.
It felt great and lapped up the miles without batting an eyelid.
The car actually started to feel more alive the further we drove.
Really seemed to loosen up.

AMG really were very good.
Very accommodating and went out of their way to help.

Volker (the scary looking dude) was very helpful and allowed me in the workshop to talk things over with the techies, of which there were 3 of them, all happily sharing their knowledge.

They did not charge me anything.
Really appreciated this.
They even typed up a translated description of what to relay to my dealer.

Palmball's SLS!

We saw Andy's SLS sitting in the design studio, presumably await to undergo some of Andy's very particular requests

Kinda looked sorry for itself in the corner of the studio, so we went over and said hello :D

Don't worry Andy, it was roped off and out of reach :D

Loved reading this... Sounds like it was brilliant!! Pics are great too... That McLaren oh lordyyyy :) I'd love to have seen your faces both trying to argue your case to get on the wider carriages and also the fuel running so low... Happy cleaning!! :)

Car buffoonery.

We were all excited about the trip and enjoyed it very much.

There were moments when we were able to enjoy the cars.
The autobahns were wide, long and very smooth. (the bits without roadworks anyway!).

Drag racing was had
Top speed tests were not really possible though, due to traffic as Simon mentioned

The mountain roads around the Nurburgring were quite stunning.
It was raining when we got there so the roads were wet.
This spoilt enjoying the twistys too much but certainly presented us with some tail-out action round the hair-pin bends
Actually I was pretty glad when the twistys came to an end because any longer and I'm pretty sure a couple of us would have ended up facing the wrong way!:D

Our cars muscling through the towns, traffic and even entering and leaving the service stations attracted a lot of attention. Especially the 2 Black Series.

I mean, how often do you see a CLK Black and a C63 Black running together.

I even enjoyed a little ESP-off action when leaving a service station

It was fair to say that all of our cars turned heads. Especially being that we were all driving in convoy.
There were many admiring salutes for fellow motorists.

Apart from the odd old-timer that really seemed to have some deep-set beef!

I'll never forget "Patrick Moore" who was in some red old banger.
lol
Man, that dude seemed to have it in for us... and channelled his beef towards me! lol

Gotta hand it to him though... he must have had a 900cc engine and was ringing the life out of it to get one over on us as we exited a motorway.
Had no idea what he was playing at and actually felt bad for us perhaps diving across him to exit.
But then I soon realised that he was exiting too and was hell bent on getting in front of us.
He undertook me as I slowed for the exit bend.
Couldn't believe what I was seeing! lol
The old-timer must be dealt with....
Rounded the bend onto the next motorway and tore passed the old bugger.
I looked over to see a spitting image of Patrick Moore glaring out of his quarter light at me! lol

first time it has been properly exercised in years :D

Hey! :p

Yes, there were moments of glory and moments of panic... mostly on my part  :D

I'll post up more pics later..

Splitter.

For those curious, my splitter held firm and didn't budge.
I think the highest speed I got to (on the autobahn, Dhard!) was around 140-150mph.

Looks like I did very similar trip at the same time but I'm sure I didn't see you as it would be impossible not to notice the group of AMGs and you would certainly notice me :)

However there's plenty of AMGs in German cities, at least that's what I noticed in Nuremberg and Mainz. A few times, I thought it's my car driving without me.

Monday was pretty bad, I was driving for 5h in rain from Northern Germany till Calais.

Hey! :thumb:
Yes, we had the same issue with rain all the way to Calais
