hi all

bought myself a small/cheap trolley jack and it does not lift high enough! What do they say - buy cheap buy twice!!

so i am after a trolley jack like you see in the tyre change places. lif high enough and have a long handle too. Have seen one in halfords for 90 notes but; given how much i am not going to use it, i wondered whether any one has an old one they want to sell?

I am in Birmingham so quite centrally located,

cheers

matt

Hello,

I bought an aldi special in a case for £20 and I've used it to lift the wifes A class and our caravan, how high do you need it to go?

There looks a very good one on Costco for around £60 my brothers looking at it as it very low and he has a track car that being so low would be handy saing driving onto a plank first..)

the one i bought goes to about 350-380mm IIRC. this does not lift the front end of the g/f's estate (and no - she was not in it at the time!)

I would guess I need one that goes at least 500mm - then I can get the axle stands under.

I'm pretty sure the Costco one for £60 is the same as the one in Machine Mart:

That blue / ally jack is very good. I have one. The same jack appears under 1000s of different names

Everything I have bought from Costco is always great quality.

Cheers

Hi
I have 2 small trolly jacks which I have bought over the years and when it comes to jacking a merc they do not lift high enough and let the car drop down as soon as you turn away.I bit the bullit and bought a 3 ton professional/Heavy duty CTJ 3000G about £70 at machine mart and it does the job fine and stays up all day

One tip, try and get one with a round cup without the claws, it is also handy to put some thick rubber in the bottom of the cup to avoid damage to the sills

ALDI stores will have trolly jacks in this coming thursday - around £12 i think

Yes, but to be honest they are not worth buying. They have a high saddle and short lift, combine that with the poor method of releasing the oil they are a bad idea.

Costco were doing two jacks, either the low height aluminium one or a standard steel one. Both are very good.

Buy from either there or machine mart and get the best you can afford, it'll last a lifetime and work well.

I have one made by Sealey, had it about 15 years and it's still working well though might think about replacing it soon as it's cheaper to do that than repair the seals on this one.

Once upon a time I had a wonderful car jack, a professional one that a little leak. As the manufactures were just down the road I rang to ask if they had new seals, no problem said the girl, just bring your old ones in.

So I did that only to be told that they did not do them anymore :mad::mad:and that was the end of that.

Hello,

My £12 aldi special has lifed cars to change wheels and lifted the van to change wheels.

I use it once in a blue moon but leave in in the car for long trips, Never tried it in the ML but I'm guessing it has to be better than what ever is supplied as they are usually cr@p.

Ok it will not be the 'best' and if I was wroking under the car I would use axel stands and chuck some old tyres under also anyway. For the times I've used it well worth £12.

There is a kit in Halfords or was before Christmas, Jack, 2* Axel Stands, 2 * ramps for £49.99 looked ok? also

Still think the costco one looks good for heavy use..

Agree with Maclomn I always use a blank of old wood cut to a suare on top of the jack to protect sills.

:)

I have axle stands; the intention is ALWAYS to use them (saw a nasty crush injury once). the bit about a wooden block has got me thinking. If i use an offcut of 2 or 3" hardwood it might be sufficient for the job.

will try when weather is half decent!

A cup with ½ of an old dough nut in is better as wood can split and slide, on all MB's there is the two lifting points each side just under the jacking holes where the cup of the jack can be located and it cant slide off.

No ground near my house is level and I had the V70R sitting flat on the ground with 2 wheels off. After that I went out and bought a super jack

I would never trust ANY jack with my life (i.e. if working under the car).

I've got a cheap Halfords trolley jack that again is fine for the occasional use I put it to. I needed to lift a caravan a few weeks ago and wanted to go higher than the jack allowed ... no big deal to do it in 2 stages (1st lift, onto stands, lower jack, insert timber packing, 2nd lift, onto stands again).

Obviously for regular use like this a better jack would easily be justified.

I have no idea re: jacks etc & was thinking of getting the Aldi ones incase I ever need to change a wheel etc, It says you need to use axle stands also - is that to support the weight I take it - without it would it be highly unstable?

I've seen a mechanic working under a Jaguar XJ seriesIII using a high lift jack. The car was tilted right up with the rear off the ground and one front wheel trying to lift.

It scared the **** out of me.

At the entrance to the Mechanic X show last year they had loads of cars all lifted to crazy angles where you could work on the underside of the car, I just felt sure that this must impose tremendous loads on the wheels etc, but I guess the makers know what they are doing

Malcolm, pardon my ignorance but the only dough nut i know is the edible sort. Can you describe what you mean another way for me please (i am having a blonde afternoon)
