I took the spare wheel out,( Looking for water ) & found a short piece of plastic tube about 12" long coming from the front of the wheel well, battery side & just waving in the air. I can't see anywhere this tube should go.Is there anyone that does.

Sounds like it could be a battery vent tube? Perhaps the car once had a battery that needed a vent tube and now has one that doesn't?

^^^ What he said.

older batterys had a vent new ones are sealed

Most modern batteries still have a vent hole on either side of the battery and the tube should still be connected to one side of the vent hole. You will need the right angle plastic piece which if you are missing is £1.32 from your local dealer.

2003 w211 e320 & thanks everyone. It must be a new batt. as there are no holes in either end of the batt. to take a connection.

Check the battery, there are blanking plates over the holes at each end (if they are there).
