Mercedes E320 cdi
Hi all, my Merc e320cdi w211 is now in limp mode! I noticed a few months ago that if I accelerated hard then the car would go into limp mode! This wouldn't always happen but may 3-4 times out of 10! If I turned the engine off then it would all resume back to normal with no issues.Anyway this has got worse and I decided to book into my local indie which was a three week waiting list. I thought and he suggested that it could be the actuator! In the last few days I accelerated again as it hadn't done it for a while and it is now in permanent limp
Mode with engine light on. I took it into the Indy today before next week just so he could read the codes. He said it is showing the actuator fault and an egr fault.
I want to know can the actuator be taken off the straight 6 and a new one fitted or repair only and would the egr be knackered Aswell? Also would I have to buy a new turbo. I may point out that I took it to the same garage about 3 months ago and he said your turbo seems to be opening up fine( this was after it had done it). Any suggestions welcome? Thanks

EGR usually doesn't require replacing, a good clean and ensure it doesn't stick.

The actuator can be replaced but MB will not sell it separate, you need to go to a turbo supplier

Could be either or could be both, erase faults and drive the car until it goes into limp mode, re check faults.

Egr is more common.

Hi guys, I'm a bit confused! I thought I had an egr valve so last week took it in and it was egr fault only! I decided to have it replaced and it was going to happen tommorow. I have bought a new egr at £230 b plus£40 surcharge and the car was in permanent limp
Mode with engine light on. He's my dilemma, last night I noticed the light off and car a little more spirited. It is now not in limp mode and I'm thinking to I change the egr for £300 or do I take the part back and wait.

My options would be: take it in and see whether there is still an egr fault and then decided whether to fit or wait! Or run some good fuel through the car as in shell nitro, give it some beans and maybe consider getting an engine carbon clean, the latter I'm wondering will this work ???????

I normally run supermarket fuel but have been told recently to run good stuff which I think I will now. Would the carbon clean out my egr and possibly loosen up my sticky throttle valves?

Please can someone help me about before tomora, thanks in advance

Rather than replace the EGR, it may just need a good clean. Once it is off you can judge how coked up it is.

If you are paying for the labour, the dilemma is you pay to have it taken off, cleaned and then replaced. It may solve your issue and save the £230 on parts.

If it still sticks then you will need to pay the labour again to have it replaced.

Much easier decision if you can do some of it yourself

Thanks that might be an option! Out of interest does anyone know whether using more premium fuel would stop thinks like egr valves clogging up as easy

if you have an actuator problem, these can be refurbed/reconditioned. its cheaper than replacing the turbo. A lot of people have the EGR switched off, all it does recirculate soot into the system whilst the engine is running cold and to eliminate black smoke.

Take it for a good thrash now and then - that will help

100% spot on, get that motor warmed up and run it at motorway speed but perhaps a gear or 2 lower to raise the rpm, exercise the turbo, actuators and the the EGR.

Perhaps a terraclean? mixed opinions on here but i think its more preventative than a repair.

Thanks for all your comments! I've taken the egr back and I'm just giving the car some beans! I have considered carbon clean but I don't know what people's thoughts are. I'm going to be using manual on my gearbox a lot more

I've only had my E280 CDI 06 sport for 6 weeks and so far I've had more trouble than it's worth and it's mafe me very angry as much as O love it :( I drove it 60 miles up the Motorway to London and back and she ran fine albiet only 36mpg (I was going a bit too fast)
Anyway yesterday on the way home from work It felt like the speed limiter was on and wouldn't accelerate at all! She spluttered when I turned her off , I went in the house and changed and went back out shopping and havent had a repeat yet!
However to be on the safe side I took it to an Indy Mercedes garage who say code 2510-001 boost pressure regulator signals fault!
They say I need a new at a total of £2150 that's total inc ancillary's but even so that's astronomical isnt it?? & thats for a recond Turbo ffs! So all I can say is HELP! Do I really need a new Turbo? isn't there anything else I can try ? apart from blowing it up!
Am thinking of an engine carbon clean to see if that helps? Or if I have to perhaps an exchange turbo?
Thanks all

If it's the actuator, it can be replaced but not from MB, there are specialists who can do this for you.

Get a breakdown of what they say needs doing, we can try to help you.

EGR may need a clean and a good old thrash down the m'way

Thanks Bob, Am gutted mate all I need! the so called warranty isnt worth the paper it's written on! £500 max exc labour !
The Mercedes indy say on paper work given the quote but only say Fault to boost pressure regulator and new turbo required if fault happens again , They dont mention the Actuator at all?
Have booked a carbon clean which inc the Egr

Oh just seen another note on my paper work , seems related to faulty Turbo? Actuator ? 2616-002 Exhaust back pressure sensor control variation , Exhaust back pressure too high.
How will I know if the Turbo will need replacement or hopefully I can get away with the Actuator? She's only got 71k
Am very worried :( Need a Sussex Turbo wiz that's not going to charge me ££££££

Turbo actuators can be refurbed, the rest of the turbo will be fine. the Actuator failure can be caused by an oil leak with a failed O-Ring and dripping over time on to the actuators.
the reurb cost wont eb high but the turbo has to come out. You cant get replacement actuators on their own.

have a look here, it may help you get a fix which wont break the bank. I suggest a replacement o-ring is sorted at the same time whist the turbo is out.

Thank you Sir, Hopefully I can find out where to send it? or even better a local to Littlehampton turbo specialist ?
Am totally gutted that after only 6 weeks I've had nothing but problems inc 2 faulty parktronic sensors, Number 1 glow plug,Air intake red seal, Brakes squealing like fook! even tho new pads!
I sold my beloved 1 owner & low milage S type to buy a Merc am quickly beginning to regret it! but she looks so good!
Rip off dealership Britannia cars dinnington sold it to me saying it had one owner and all the usual bollox!
Tried the warranty company and low behold it only had a £500 max claim! what else could I've expected from this type of scum bag dealer?

You should at least get it refurb'd in less than £500...can you not claim that?
