Having a problem on my 58 plate E 320 cdi. Every so often when starting from cold car bunny hops down the road and goes I to limp home mode. Switch off and back on all is fine. Have been to my local MB dealer who has decided it's the turbo seals and I need anew turbo, seals and ancillaries at £2600. Wow!!
I've also been in touch with an Indy who wants to check the car themselves, obviously, but on the basis of whst is needed will charge £1600 if using bits from MB or £1100 if using a recon garret turbo
I have alwYs used my franchised dealer until now but I am hoping everyone will tell me, don't be silly, use the Indy, go down the garret route save some money, it will be fine, and it won't affect the resale value of the car. The Indy has said they have access to the digital service record so can log eveything as though the car was worked on by MB?

A main dealership will tell you what they assume it to be going off a series of codes and what their book/diagnostic system tells them. It may not always be right unfortunately, and could be something a lot simpler than what they say.

I personally wouldn't be using a main dealer on an out of warranty car, especially as most good independents are probably as, if not more, skilled than franchised dealers. In fact some of the good ones would be able to tell you what the problem is just by your description, though would obviously have to confirm by checking it out. Also, Garrett make most of the turbos, so it's logical to buy from them.

Where do you live?

This would allow people to recommend an Indie based on experience. There are some who advertise as specialists, though leave a lot to be desired.

What was your outcome mate?

Two diagnostics checks and both pointing to the need for a new turbo. As an aside my mb franchised dealer checked for nothing. The Indy charged £39!!
So I have a choice of a gen mb turbo, an oe part or a reconditioned garrett turbo, with descending cost. Unsure which way to go
