The boots on my E320 will soon need replacing. At present they are Conti Sport Contacts (245x45 17 IIRC).

The thing is they are quite noisy. Would Michelin Pilot Sports (or whatever they call them these days be any quieter? My preferences are refinement and long life rather than outright grip on a racing track.

Does anyone have any experiences?

I'd recomend a look at Falcon 452. Have them on the BMW and very pleased with the ride / noise and seem to wear well, they are well regarded as an excellent tyre and very good value for money.

"refinement and long life rather than outright grip "

That's consistent with my experience of Michelin Pilot on my three MBs, assuming that refinement = low noise. Some say that their wet grip is inferior; I have never noticed and in any case don't push to the limits.

At least twice a year I do a comparison between Michelin and Dunlop SP 01 on my S Class. (I have 2 sets of wheels) I like the Dunlops better both for ride and noise. There is little to choose on grip and wear.
I'm in a new CLS loan car this week with Dunlops and again I am impressed.
Mytyres have the MO version to fit your car at £115, but Falkens are a little cheaper. The Contis suffer more than most with noise when worn, but it happens with all tyres to some extent.:(

just fitted falken se912s - £75 per corner balanced and fitted.

Michelin Pilot Primacy on the S-class are very quiet - MB compound those rather than generic compound so I don't know if it makes any difference.

Am 4 months into a set of Dunlop SP01s after Conti Sport Contact2s and am very impressed
