I just spent a few hours pottering with a cloth, hoover etc and educated myself
I got the spare wheel out and discovered...
broken glass in the wheel well. I guess the previous owner broke the glass back window or roof at some point
I skinny space saver tyre which at first glance looks like its delaminating from the rim, but then, a 12v compressor, presumable to blow it up to full size
