Another quicky chaps and chapesses ....

When you buy a tyre, what is the typical (new) depth of the tread before you start driving on it ?

How many miles do you reckon a tyre with 7 mm of tread left has done ?

Howard,

I think it is about 8mm for a brand new tyre. Assuming you replace at 2 mm you have 6mm of useful life. Therfore wear of 1 mm represents approx 17% of the tyre life. The miles will depend on vehicle, driving style, etc, etc

Regards,

Steve

the tyre is usually 8 mil brand new, nit sure how many miles it needs to take 1 mil of, depends on driving i suppose. I have bought many tyres part worn around 7-6 mil and they have been ok till now for around 2 yrs or so (again depending on driving and tyre)

Some makes of tyres are only 7mm NEW, but normally new ones are 8mm.
Wear rate depends on lots of factors and the first 1mm could be anything from 2000-7000miles.

Cool, its all sounding good so far ....

So, its reasonable to assume that they have plenty of life left in them then if only a mil or two has been worn off ?

Sure is Mate, nearly new and just run in.

All I know is Nokian generally have 9mm. Although the last ones I bought, (NRV-225/45x17) had 10mm. tread.

They actually state these figures on their websites.

Ciao.....

I had a run round kwik-Fit today with my depth gauge,Dunlop,Michelin,Continental and Pirelli all have 8mm tread new.We had a BMW 1 series in today that had done 1700 miles..it had 7mm on the rear tyres...
