Auto Express has a good article about TYRE AGING in conjunction with Continental. :thumb:They are looking for a clear display on the sidewall of "date of manufacture" and a "best before date" on tyres and a UV damage indicator. They also have a section on how tyre braking performance drops off markedly with age--- 23% longer distance to stop.
Valid campaign or boost for tyre sales?? you decide but certainly worth a read if you were unaware of the issues involved .;)

The date has always been there it is just in a format that most people would not recognise or look for. I thought that this is a great idea - 10 year old tyres may be Ok on an old morris minor at 40mph on the b roads but not so good for rapid m-way cruising on busy roads. Five or six years and they are past their use by date.

What a difference in performance older tyres make!!!!!
I drive about 35k miles a year so im constantly going through tyres, but i have often wondered about the UV damage when i see some older 4x4's running about with a cracked tyre bolted on to the boot withoiut any cover.

On average cars the tyres wear out before age becomes an issue. But for 2nd/3rd cars it can be a problem, on caravans/trailers even more so.

we hit the track in a car with a set of nine-year-old rubber to see how it measured up to some comparable new tyres with the same tread depth.
Hmm ... not a very valid test unless the brand and model of tyre were identical. You will get a significant variation between different brand new tyres.

Tyres are often overlooked. I only buy what in my opinion are the best. I wouldnt skimp on tyres myself.

I get the cheapest with the nicest pattern:rolleyes:. Currently Accelera Alpha!

I also buy only the best when it comes to tyres. Shame the garage I bought the car from didn't as my fronts are tripe!

The only thing between the car and the road is the tyre. I always buy decent quality, not the french ones or the F1 ones as they are just over the top for price, I quite like Avon's.
