Car
2010 E class 250
after buying a e class e250 from an approved used Mercedes dealership I noticed tyre wear on the outside edge of the front near side tyre, when questioning as to why this has occurred the service managers response was and I quote " this is normal wear and is caused by the steering camber and it's the same on all E series cars" I just cannot believe this to be true.
I would like to know if anyone else has been told this,
I look forward to any response

Regards les

"They all do that, sir".

To be fair to the Service Manager it is a well known phenomena with MB cars on UK roads. I have never owned a MB that has not exhibited this.

Front tyres on outside edge are pretty worn on my S204, rest of the tyres are like new.

Pretty galling really and surprising given the number of sales in the UK why Merc can't sort a fix :-(

Not just Mercedes, Some Hondas have the same type wear.

I took my S204 for 4 wheel alignment due to this wear. All was within spec. I was advised to inflate front tyres 2 psi higher than spec to 34 psi and when changing tyres chose something with a stiff sidewall. I went for Goodyear Extra Load and these look good so far.

I hate to say it but to some extent it's true. Of all the tyres the NSF has the tightest turning radius which generates lateral scrub. It's for this reason they designed the Ackerman angle which is the differential lock radius between the NSF/ OSF
Example
OSF wheel on a 20 degree lock
Then the NSF will be at 21 degrees 30'

Other geometric factors apply but Ankerman is the criminal here.

Thanks for getting back to me, at least I now it's a common fault but still surprised .

I've just done 2000 miles in to weeks driving to Italy & now in the south of France. I put 4 new Goodyears on my 220 cdi coupe the day we left. Can only say they've been fantastic, Swiss Alps in heavy rain, Italian autostrader with heat of 34' the car sticks to the road like glue. The best tyres I've had.

It's not really a fault. It's just the nature of the car. If you didn't have this happen it would cause issues in other areas.

I don't believe it's a nature of the car so I'm pursuing the matter further and I'm getting a result so will update soon

I have a W212 2012 E250 sport and my nearside front tyre is also worn on the outside edge whereas the tread on the rest of the tyre is fine (except that I have a slow puncture so I'm having to buy a new tyre!)

Most cars in our road go and turn around at the next road spurring off ours. All the N/S fronts are scrubbed on the outside. I asked my wife to avoid turning round in one go on full lock and rather drive in and reverse back. As Black C55 and WIM said there are alot of problems to sort out to make a car "all things to all men ". Triumph Herald's were one of the best examples of the Ackerman angle going wrong after a certain point. I was quite impressed by how well my 203 steers and has a good turning circle as well. I think that accounts for the apparent lack of trail reducing the self centreing ability and members problem with their cars 'pulling' to one side but they must stand by their geometry choice to give the cars 'that feel' that they want.

I have a 2014 A200 CDi AMG Sport which has just over 10k miles both front tyres (Continental) have worn on the out side edge to a point where there is no tread visible, I have taken to MB and they informed me it is normal for this car to wear tyres like this. My neighbour has the same car with similar mileage and exact same issue with the tyres. The rest of the tyre is fine. Surely I should expect more than 10k of a new set of tyres!!!!!

Listen mate. It is the nature of the car as BlackC55 says and he is one the countrys top independent Merc specialists.
We all have mercs on the forum and they all do this. I've got one outside with the outside edges worn.

I agree - all rear wheel drive Mercs have the same issue

My 211 E 320CDi exhibited scrubbing on the outside edges at the front on 8th old Michelin Premacy XP tyres.

I have a w212 coupe and although I've looked after tyres pretty well (coming up 22.5K), definitely some more wear on the outer edge.

I am sure you must be able to buy a camber kit and put a little more camber on the front. This will improve your handling with less understeer and will eliminate the outer edge tyre ware.

All this talk of wear on the fronts prompted me to do a tyre rotation today. The Michelin Energy fronts had done 10,114 miles so I was pleasantly surprised to find they didn't look too bad and still have 6mm of tread. It's hard to judge shoulder wear though when even new tyres have rounded shoulders and do not have even tread depth across the whole width.

[FONT=&quot]I know from experience that the rears will wear in the centre and fonts will wear on the shoulders so rotation is always worthwhile even without the very severe wear that some are experiencing. One factor that may have reduced the problem on my car is the Blue Efficiency spec means they are only 195’s and will scrub less than wider tyres.
