cls 350 cdi
Morning all,

Having had a mostly very enjoyable few thousand miles with our cls the time has come to change tyres. After wading through a number of reports and a discussion with the helpful local MB garage I have decided to try Goodyear EfficientGrip and since I am having to change all four tyres the effect should be noticeable! Just for interest I was recommended michelin pilots and continental MO to replace the strange combination installed by the previous owner of Avons (front) and Michelin Pilotsport (rear). The Michelins had worn evenly and are being replaced purely due to low tread. The Avons however tell a different story... I had recently noticed a vibration and wheel bearing noise coming from the front . I couldn't understand this because the front tyres seemed practically new with almost maximum tread and no visible damage. Up on the ramp however both front tyres have worn unevenly on the inside which apparently is the cause of the increasing noise inside the car. Just to be certain I have asked for the tracking to be checked at the same time and the test will come when I pick up the car soon. I'd be interested in any feedback others have had with Goodyear EfficientGrips especially CLS owners. Will post an update when I've had a chance to trial the new tyres.

Hi

ive owned my CLS for 10 months now, and covered around 16000 miles in that time. it had a nearly set of Contis on when I bought it, and they are still in good shape. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the Goodyear tyres though

Im going to be watching this thread with interest. Ive only had my CLS about 2 months but since day one Ive always considered the road noise to be more than it should be - I too get the wheel bearing noise and Im 100% convinced its due to the make of tyre. I think its Hankooks that are on all 4 corners and they are all virtually new so they will probably outlast my ownership ( I change cars like most women change their shoes ) but if I see reports of excessive road noise being reduced by sticking on a set of X , Y or Z , Id maybe be tempted to change them. Im still on the standard 18's with 245 on the front and 275 on the rear.

Conti Sport Contact 3 rear and Evergreen :dk: front on my CLS , really quiet on the motorway.

Mine should be due for replacement in around six months after a total of 18k miles , the wheels could be doing with a refurb also due to some of the lacquer peeling.

Been running a CLS 350 as a daily driver for two years and 30k miles. Have cont sport contact 3's all round. The fronts do wear on the inside edge and I hear from tyre specialists that's it's a common wear pattern on wide wheels with some camber. Look at the car front on and you will see the wheels look like they point in slightly at the top and this is a trait I have noticed with all of the mercs I have run. Might be an expert on here who disagrees or can offer more of an explanation. I also tend to use OE tyres when replacing.

My current tyre setup is Michelin PS3, the previous conti 3's covered 30 odd thousand miles and wore even no shoulder wear.

I always have 4 wheel hunter alignment after a tyre change. There are of course many variables, driving style and type of road surfaces to consider.

My current conti sport 3s have loads of tread left after 18k miles but the sidewalls are cracked on all of them.

I emailed continental with photos and they said the tyres are safe but I can get a refund for unused portion when I get a new set from my tyre dealer. Trouble is i was looking at buying tyres online from tyreleader as they are super cheap. Anyone returned tyres to conti before?

I've just put 4 x Dunlop sp sport 01 MO on my cls500.

Very pleased with them , did 300 miles in the pouring rain last Friday , they performed very well.

£125 fitted and balanced per corner , 245/40/18

No , at my local tyre shop. They got them in for me.

I like to support local businesses and in turn they look after me.

Reading your comments I'm looking forward to trying out with the new tyres. The noise from the Avons had become quite obtrusive. I'll post something early next week. Incidentally my local MB dealer will organise fitting the tyres and offer to match some online prices. The cost to me is £116 per tyre excluding tracking.

I have had some good experiences with Dunlop blueresponse but that was on a smaller car and not available for the cls when I asked recently.

Surprised you have 245's all round Howard , Ive got 275's on the rear I thought that was standard size ?

Only the real cars got staggered wheels/tyres. The wimpy ones have to make do with the same size all round... ;)

I have all Bridgestone RE050A on my CLS 500, I have not had any others on to compare but I am more than happy with them, seem to be quite a hard wearing tyre.

I guess the 5 litre V8's aren't manly enough compared to a 3.2 diesel ?

Have you got 275's on the standard wheels or have you got AMG's on it ?

I guess I've got staggered wheels as they are stamped FRONT ONLY and REAR ONLY on them ?

Hehe... It's all about torque ;)

In all seriousness, the CLS is one of the few cars that has front and rear wheels which are the same width but different offsets, that's why they have massive casting showing which is which so even a Kwik fit guy can't put them back on the wrong way!
If yours have 245s all round and the rear tyres don't appear to be stretched then you do not have staggered wheels.

You don't have to have AMG wheels to have staggered wheels. Since the W220 S class, most MB models have been available with standard width all round or staggered as an option.

Usually the bigger engined varieties do get staggered as standard fitment though.

according to my 2005 price list, the CLS500 came with the 8.5J all round as standard

staggered fitment wheels were available as options for all models, standard on AMGs

To make them safer right? :D

I had to put new tyres on the back of my CL, thought I would put 285/35/20s instead of 275/35/20s, to give it a bit more grip, but the guy in the garage talked me out of it saying it would **** up the computer, was he right?
