just had the good news from Mercedes garage that I need 2 rear tyes. They recomended Continental contact 2 for £97.00 each.
Can anyone suggest a good tyre and also best place to make a purchase. I am off on a long trip next week so would like to sort it for the weekend.

    tyre size 205/55 16

    Cheers in advance

Where are you? If near Woking in Surrey, I would recommend Martins tyres in West End.

Continental Premium Contact 2s are very comfortable, quiet and long lived tyres. I have had them on my W124s and they have performed well.

I just had my tyrers changed at martins tyers they were good on price, and I was in and out in no time but there customer service wasn't great. I tryed to ask a few questions and was just hurried away, a bit of the ruff and ready type.

I'm not knocking your experiences with them Charles it just my opinion of course. No offence ment.

Ive got Michelin Pilot sport 3 tyres in 205/55/16 and im very happy with them.

I got mine from costco and they were very reasonable.

£153.60 fully fitted for 2x Continental Premium Contact 2 MO at Saxon Gate, Biggleswade (temporarily in Sandy).
I keep with the original fitment.

None taken. I like cheap and quick, especially given how rapidly my C55 eats tyres.

Sounds about right. I paid £85 per corner for a set of Conti Premium Contact 2 MO at the size quoted by the OP ( London prices...).

I've used Martin's tyres for over 15 years and yes that's the reason why the price is so competitive, in and out. They don't hang around.

Next time you go speak to Paul, the owner.

Have used camskill before for a set Toyo T1R's, they were the cheapest by quite a bit.

Dont know how mercs like the Toyo T1R's but I found them very good on my old motor. Loads of grip, very progressive in the wet and the dry. Predictable on the limit and past it. Cant say how loud they are as it was a noisy car, but they dont last long at all, hit the wear indicator at about 7000 miles.

Seeing the glowing reports and recommendations all over for conti premium contact2 for w124s, and currently driving round on the spare, I'm about to switch the front two out.

Just looked in my handbook and it recommends 195/65/zr15 or wide tyres 205/60/zr15.

As I a) do loads of miles, and b) deliver wedding cakes, which one of these will ride better/smoother, and how will mpg be affected. I'm no specialist and I guess the changes will be minimal, but I really jhave no idea. And at a later date, would you recommend having the larger option on the rear axle whatever the front choice. Currently the car has pirelli p6000 wide tyre option on all corners. Thanks.

English, I bit the bullet and went for the Cont Premium contacts thet seem fine, although like everyone else I am no expert. On chatting to the guy fitting the tyres, he said they were a soft tyre for a comfortable ride, which from my point of view complimented the set up.

I agree. I bought a set of four, and this is correct. If you want a harsher ride, go for the Continue SportContact series. But for comfort, the PremiumContact 2 is a great tyre.

Thanks, its deffo the tyre for me, so do you reckon the 195/65 or the 205/60 won't differ in comfort or economy from each other, enough to notice?

The 195/65 will give a softer ride. Michelin, Conti & Toyo all have soft sidewalls. .

What size did your originally came with? I.e. what size is listed in the service book?

I don't think the 195 and 205 tyres are interchangeable on the same wheel.
