Had my car serviced yesterday (2nd one). All good apart from tyres. I'm a bit disappointed that premium tyres such as Continental are splitting in the treads. Only done 11,500 miles as well!

Bit disappointed with the dealer, that they didn't explain anything about this. The service lady just said one of my tyres needs replacing immediately, thats about it. It was only when I got home and studied the report that I started asking questions like how come the tyres are wearing unevenly...? I also tried looking for these "cuts and exposed cords" but couldn't see anything, might need a second opinion on that from a tyre specialist.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I think that is the price you pay for running low profile tyres of such sizes?

My tyres are on the bones of their Ar$e and I know it, but I notice they don't like low speed full lock in the drive when turning on my block paving.
You may only have down 11K miles but if it was all in a straight line I suspect they would be ok it is slow speed turning etc, poor roads, camber and ?

You have to price it in as the price of owning such a car.

Think the wife was quoted about 850 for all four on my SL, which I will happily pay.

Addition. father in law did have some Conti's on a Merc that did not last, local tyre man told him to write to Conti who I think sent him a voucher, so maybe they do admit to a bad batch once in a while.

S88 I think you're right there, most of my driving is urban, no motorways and not much in the way of dual carriageways. And yes, when I enter my driveway on full-lock, it doesn't like that at all, and infact the tyre that is supposed to have cuts is the one that hits the kerb first. A lot of speed bumps and potholes round here too. Also roadworks and raised ironworks. I once accidentally drove over a raised drain once, and it scared me half to death, I thought I'd crashed because the car shook that violently!

With the regards to cost of ownership, yes I was expecting to pay for at least 1 set of tyres whilst I've got this car, it's just a shame that with 3-4mm of tread on them, they are going to have to be replaced early.

Thanks for the Conti tip, I might try that one!

I would check your wheel alignment and suspension geometry - especially if you didn't buy the car new and / or you know it has been down lots of pot holes / had lots of knocks.

I did mine after I first bought it to ensure even tyre wear.

Take it to someone who knows what they are doing (Wheels in Motion in Chesham for example). Long drive but could save you replacing tyres earlier than expected thus saving you cash...

Shame to hear that, I really to go on, but the extra few £ IMHO is always worth paying for Michelin. Tyres are about the only good thing the French make, apart from cheese and wine of course...

Mich. crack more than Conti's, I'll not bore with there other poor issues, so that leaves the cheese & wine..

Sadly "Service Advisors" are just glorified receptionists... they are trained in pricing-up service jobs but have no clue what they are acrually selling.

The Service Advisor at one of the UK's largest MB dealers (and MB-owned) who booked my car in thought they were using semi-synth oil... I had to correct him on that, and it turned out he wasn't fully aware of the difference between semi-synth and full-synth, and had no idea what 229.3 or 229.5 were...
