Hi , I fully understand that correct season type tyres are better than summer tyre in the United Kingdom in the winter months.

Car tyres are expensive and is it realistic that the average motorist can have two different tyres of tyres on the daily driver car.

I don't think that winter tyres are available in my tyre size so I am stuffed regardless !

No you can't mix them. Its all or nothing.

All weather tyres are mainly available in 18 " format.

It is exceptional for a vehicle to be "approved" to a single rim/tyre combination.

Many MB cars have a big range of fitments across the globe. However, may be limited for UK market.

"Your" standard fitment could be 255/35 and 235/40 in 18" - sufficient winter choices. As an alternative Michelin even do a Cross Climate.

I would say that having two sets of tyres - one summer and one winter - is even more important on a car that’s used daily - garage queens stay in the garage when conditions aren’t quite right, whereas “daily drivers” keep on driving.

Having two sets of tyres need not be expensive, you don’t have to buy tyres any more often as both sets will last roughly twice as long. Winter tyres cost around the same as summer tyres, and are available part-worn too.

Storage need not be a problem either if you use a tyre hotel, however the compromise is the need to switch - whether you do it yourself at home; or you take it to a tyre specialist it’s an hour out of your day twice every year, so not so bad.

Hi Bobby Dazzler ,. Don't think that winter tyres are available for 19" rims with my tyre size.Although I am technically stuffed re winter tyres this car spends the winter months in Portugal. The problem I am going to have in that I cannot obtain MO approved tyres as Cont P5 tyres don't now make an approved tyre although Mercedes suggest that you fit MO tyres.I read with interest you comments regarding the difference between MO and non approved tyres.

Looks as if it will have to be Pilot Sport 4s MO next time !

Hope you don't my me saying but I do like reading your writings

I personally use All season tyres permanently on my Vehicles, have had and been impressed with Cross climate+ on a previous car which were 18s have Bridgestone A005 all weather on my Subaru and Hankook kinergy 4s on my W212 all were 18s, you can get similar in 19s as well and they are all snowflake marked so fully legal where required, Continental also do an excellent All season.
You do give up a fractional amount to a summer Tyre for grip in the dry however all other areas are improved such as wet grip, aquaplaning etc plus of course in Winter they just work and surprisingly so, my previous 2wd on cross climates actually drove past a stuck 4wd on summer tyres.

What size are they ?

Hi -3 this morning and when reversing out of parking space no skipping !

To be fair not a real problem on my car but 5 - 7 tyres can skip.

Tyre Cont 5p 235/35/19 255/30/19Cont 5p

I have a 4x4 and reversing out you can feel the car year box winding up so I put into rear wheel drive and no issues.

Could the real issue be that tyres have improved over years but 4x4 cars are fairly new but Audi have more experience than other German car companies.

If you have a 4x4 car that tyres skip be careful as you could be putting undue loading on the drive systems.

Just my thoughts.
