Uber halts self-driving car tests after death

The lights on the autonomous car aren't very effective, are they? I saw a shallow beam pattern as the car approached the point where the pedestrian became visible.

Maybe they should ban pedestrians from crossing high speed highways unless they use a designated crossing mechanism, such as a pedestrian crossing.

While this accident is very sad, we have to remember that pedestrians also have a duty of care. It annoys the hell out of me when the car driver is blamed for a collision between a car and a pedestrian. According to a TUV survey, commissioned by Tony Blair, in 90% of pedestrian/car collisions, the pedestrian was at fault. The biggest reason is the pedestrian is distracted by their mobile phone while crossing a road.

So, maybe we should make pedestrians responsible for their own actions rather than automatically blaming the car and/or driver.
