this has got to be the ugliest ever for me, its definatly the john prescott of cars
Definitely, definitely cannot agree. The Avantime is a perfect example of what the car industry needs: Bravery. It simply cannot be called ugly. It looks a lot like an Espace, which may be many things, but 'ugly' is not one of them. The Avantime is what French car companies always used to be about (until they got sucked into mainstream mediocrity). Challenging, pioneering design, a willingness to lead, rather than to follow, and the bravery to create niches. They did, after all, pretty-well invent the modern MPV.
I think it's a huge shame that Renault dropped the Avantime. But consider this: In the mid 90's Ford made the Scorpio that was such a turkey that they dropped it as soon as modesty would allow. Now they don't even dare to make another car in that class, let alone with that name. Renault, on the other hand, transferred some styling touches from the Avantime to their other cars. Look at the Megane's 'ass', the Espace's newest nose, the space-age dash layouts. That's Avantime, that is. They were proud of the Avantime, and rightly so.
The Avantime should be lauded and applauded, in all its sheer glorious pointlessness. It's bizarre, frightening, and daft. It was a sales flop, but it's already considered a classic. Depreciation on them has stopped at around £9-10k (not so the Scorpio). This Regie is currently not far off the bottom of my list of all time greats (it's an eclectic list, I grant you). Ask me again in 15 years, and it'll definitely have a place.
Ugly. Tut.
