ultra high capacity storage

I think people talking about Ethernet and SDLT are in the wrong ball-park here - this needs something like a library of LTO4 Fibre Channel drives.

Yeah you are kind of right - as I've pointed to transfer 10Tb of data over 1GB link you need MORE than 21h - in theory you need more than 24h

but.. there is now 10GB ethernet :) Expensive but they not looking for a cheap solution. Cisco and few others can do this!

Obviously they need dedicated backup network as well but I thin that's normal. And they need library but I've pointed this as well.

Cheers

The site already has 10Gb ethernet at the core and Gb to the edge
the proposed new (video) SAN is an HP which I understand is 10Gb capable and will be connected to their existing infrastructure

Sp!ke - video is already mpeg4 - but is megapixel high definition with a very large number of cameras. Plod may be foreced to trade off compression and framerate to balance storage. They have the numbers but at the moment we are talking about hundreds of MegaPixel cameras and 25fps.

I will wait for them to tell me they cant cope backing up the portable NAS :D

Another option, already muted, is to run real time hot start DR channel feeds to one of the few very good (read not cheap) DR companies such as Iron Mountain and a few not widely known ones that have government (inc police and defence contracts);)

In a previous life we used one and with the right line in, its real time data transfer and in a fully protected and secure data suite which you / client can access to extract onto a portable HDD for image analysis etc

DPA and 'homeland' criteria contract - sounds interesting, but also a little scary.......

You need to take differential backups to a co location NAS or SAN.
EMC, Network Applience or Isolon will be able to help you.

Dig deep thou....

In video industry there is no term like "differential backup" :)
They do create 7-10Tb of data on the daily basis.
As we have mentioned to transfer 10Tb of data (if my quick calculations are right) on 1GB link will take longer than 24h with all Ethernet overhead :)

anyway, issue seems to be resolved.

I wouldnt say its resolved, but we do have a solution where we will assist the Police in actually capturing the data in real time, how they choose to archive that data will be up to them.

I am willing to bet they will happily take 20FPS less once they see the sheer size of the problem.

10Gb network to the array, nice raid arrays and off you go!
Plus tape library, 2-3 people to take care of backups. Special room with climate control etc for tapes.
lots of data=lots of money.

Easy!

btw. is this Birmingham ?:)

Etherchannel or Fibrechannel will sort out that problem.

You forgot HDS... They currently have the technical lead.

Not heard of HDS - I should look it up, trouble is our NS40 and 2 x NS20's were delivered today so it's a bit late!

We currently have about £10m worth of EMC kit so we won't be changing at the moment!
