Hi there, I’m looking for some advise.
i have a 2000 cl500 w215
it has an esp fault which no-one including a ‘specialist’ could get to the bottom off.
several ecu have been tried, also abs pump, gear box switch also tried.
star returns with cannot communicate with ecu
Also I’m not sure if this is related but sometimes with d door open i get a message to’ move selector to park’ when already in park.
server also people have looked at this to no avail. I guess I’m looking for a specialist who really knows these cars as i would just like to resolve the issue.

Help please,
any feedback greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome. Sounds like a wiring issue to the ECU. Where did you take it to? There are some specialists down south, I'm not sure who is the closest though

Hi there bob, i took it to class cars, Mercedes specialist who had it about a month, then suggested an auto electrician who i think just parked it in his yard for another 3 months

try a new brake light switch . £13 if it fails

star returns with cannot communicate with ecu

Is ESP module getting supply voltage? Are all replacement modules been at right type? Star gives test procedures for stated fault, has they been done, by what result? Any other fault codes triggered ie. CAN faults?

Hi there, to be honest I’m not sure and wouldnt have the knowledge personally to check.
i guess I’m trying to find an expert, local to me if possible to fix it for me

The abs unit will not communicate with Star either because the canbus is down or the unit is not powered up. If comms exist with the engine ecu it’s highly unlikely that the canbus is the problem. I woild be looking to see if 12v is being supplied to the abs control unit. If not I’d immediately move to the large fuses hidden under the carpet in the front passenger footwell

Thank you for the advise.
i have checked abs plug and can detect no voltage at any pin. I also noted that with the vehicle running i was only detecting 11.2v at the battery terminals so i will investigate the fuses under the carpet.
i just want to thank you for your advise, very helpful.
i will let you know the outcome when I’ve had chance to investigate further

Hi,

I don’t think that the low voltage will be causing your esp fault, but is likely to begin causing other spurious faults if not charged fully.

hi, i have investigated the fuses and changed them out. the voltage when running on the battery terminals is now 14.2 so some progress there.
however theres still no power to the abs unit. i have also tried 2 x different near side sams units ( used ) both the same- no power to abs.
have you any further insights?

thanks again

If you have been right through the fuses and the SAM unit (from memory I think fuse 34 covers the ABS unit) you need to start testing the wiring back from the ABS unit to the SAM. From memory its two fatter red wires that power the unit up. If there is no voltage on them ring them out back to the plugs on the SAM unit until you find them. Or not, if the circuit is broken. If you have a protected power probe you can power the wires up at the unit to see if it comes to life, but you must ONLY do this if you are confident you have identified the correct wires AND tested that there is no short to ground, although a protected power probe will save issues from that.

Hi there,
so i have an update.
i have checked all fuse underneath the carpet and in the similar fuse box in the boot. All of the fuses are good and all power cables are drawing the correct power.
i still have no power at the abs pump.
there is also no power at 3 of the 4 plugs in the front of the near side fuse board and no power at the very large 50amp fuses.
All other fuses have power on both sides.
i cannot find why the abs unit has no power, all cables appear good and unmanaged.
so, off the 4 plugs visible in the photo only the black plug with a single red/white wire has any current. The 50 amp fuse also has no current on either side.
I’m really stuck hear, I’ve tried 2 diffferent used fuse boxes- same result.
I’m also getting this message on the dash intermittenlty but the car is in park.
could this be connected?
Any ideas you might have would be greatly appreciated

Show me a picture of the fusebox on the driver side underbonnet please. I don’t think the ABS is on the board you have pictured. Big 50a fuse there is for the radiator fan
