Untaxed vehicle on private land

I'm not so sure about that.
We have a 'serial road tax abuser' (;)) locally. He runs for months without tax - gets reported during that time and then eventually buys a tax disc. Whilst he is dodging paying he is using his van every day but parking it round the corner from his house on a small private industrial estate. He gets asked to remove it but ignores requests until he eventually sticks 6 months tax on, then parks outside his house. Same cycle re-starts when the 6 months tax runs out or if he acquires a new (to him) vehicle. Oh, and he hasn't yet been fined, nor has he been required to back date tax he has bought.

that sounds exciting, he must be the talk of the village.

This is the thing, these spaces are first come first serve - visitors and residents.

If it was allocated and a car was left, that is fine.

If it was allocated I would have a parking space every time.

You are spot on though - if all I have to worry about is a non issue in reality, I should count myself very lucky :)

You can check yourself to see if the vehicle is on sorn. or taxed

I live in a fairly expensive road with loads of high end vehicles. Went out last week and noticed two vehicles with clamps. On Friday there were two more so we all had good look to see what was going on and sure enough no tax displayed and the DVLA van had been round on a check. No Tax, vehicle clamped with big sticker on back saying DVLA vehicle not taxed so clamp in use. We watched as one of the vehicles was put on a low loader. I have never seen this before. Good job as it is my contribution in tax that keeps these untaxed bstards on the road. I have no hesitation in reporting anybody for not having a taxed vehicle on the road. Nice to see DVLA doing what they are supposed to do.

How do you know that he didn't complete a SORN declaration each year?

You either have to tax your car, and keep it anywhere you like, or SORN the car, and keep it off the road.
Not taxing the car and just keeping it off the road is not legal.

What if you don't tax or make a SORN : Directgov - Motoring

UNLESS , like me , you have a SORN EXEMPT vehicle : I have a car which has not been on the road since before SORN began , thus I don't have to tax it and don't have to bother SORN-ing each year - there are more cars like this than you probably imagine .

The MG mentioned above might also have been before SORN .

is it still possible for cars to become tax exempt? for instance a 24 year old 190.

No Davethemus. The cut off is prior to 1973 and you still have to display a valid disc, it just doesn't cost anything. I love classic cars - cheap insurance, no tax..

I had a car stored for years in my underground parking space, hardly moved it... I paid £12K for that space so I was damn well gonna use it!

You should have declared it scrapped, that way you don't need to mess about keep SORN-ing it.

You live in an expensive area and the neighbours are driving about in untaxed cars.

Seems a bit odd.

Well off people are not always the most honest:D

Most probably the cars belonging to the dolly birds of these well off people though. "I didn't know you had to buy a new disc every year":D

This has been happenning in London as well. Spotted this one in Chelsea a couple of months ago:

Fixed that for you. ;)

Thanks for your helpful suggestion, but I still maintain that rich people are not always the most honest.

Some may not be organised, some may be downright crooked. Honesty does not come with wealth.:)

Hi all,

We all know how expensive driving a car is.
Now here is a dilemma.

Do you report an un taxed car?

I have an old Escort parked near me in a public
car park and I go mental every time I see the tax disc.

Expired May 2010!

The other day, the female driver arrived to park and off-loaded
2 young kids.

Now I have discussed this in the office and people fall into 2 camps.

One lot says report it... why should she etc. etc.

The other view is mind my own business, maybe she is short of money!

My view is, Why, oh why should someone flout the law.

No tax, no insurance, no MOT, right?

Young kids and driving in my area, makes the chance of running into her
more likely me thinks, so I am inclined to report it.

So what do you guys think?

report it if she is clearly using the car every day.

no tax = no insurance.

have you checked online to see if it is really taxed, and she has just forgotten to put the tax disc in the windscreen?

Hi SilverSaloon,

Yes... I went on line and I have checked , dog that I am, and last tax was MAY 10, so reported via web site a couple of weeks ago. Still no action.

They estimate 2 million cars are untaxed, imagine the revenue and the roads
being clearer, but still there is this view by some, that what I am doing is in someway unfair, and if you can get away with this, it is in someway legitimate.

She carries kids for Gods sake, what happens if she has a crash with them?

This goes so much further... if all duty was collected, and all other forms
of tax chased, income etc etc. would we be as bad off as a country as we appear
to be, I wonder.

Isn't this why the Greeks are in the S**t.

High numbers paid no tax for years and tax dodging was/is the norm.

i would mind my own business, however if you are going to report her, you could let her know. that could prompt her into taxing the car and following the law. one question though,

how will a tax disc protect her children in a crash?
