This ship also had electric cars in the cargo, red the news an electric car started the fire and now the entire ship is a bonfire.
Good reason not to buy an electric vehicle as they are a fire hazard.
 
If that is the case and there are hundreds of EV's on there this ship might end up like that burning pit of gas in Turkmenistan , been on fire for 50 years or so .

There is only so much water you can pump into a burning ship until it keels over and sinks....that might be the only way of putting it out, sink it ! :eek:

I have no idea what the cause of the fire on that ship was (and therefore make no comment on that), but the presence of large quantities of Li-ion batteries in the EV cargo certainly presents a challenge to extinguish it. Having read through it, I get the impression that there won't be a long queue of fire fighters wanting to board the vessel to put the fire out...

If it really was an EV being carried that caused the fire, then that raises interesting questions as to the future distribution of EV's in "bulk" cargo and I'd expect lots of people to be poring over the current protocols to determine their validity.

Does anyone know whether existing vehicle distribution cargo ships are being used for EV distribution without modification, or do they have different fire containment and control features? If they don't currently, I suspect that will be a question to address too.

Thinking this through, the ship is still burning but some bloke on the internet ‘knows’ that the fire was started by an EV. Sounds more like he ‘wants’ the fire to be started by an EV to suit his agenda.
 
There really are no winners from disasters like this, whatever the cause. I include the planet in that.
My father did some special fire protection systems in bulk oil tankers. The tanks were large enough to have their own atmosphere, and include thunderstorms with lightning in some circumstances.....

From the article I linked in post #16, the specialist salvage team were due to arrive at the ship on 18th Feb, but ocean-going tugs wouldn't be there until next Wednesday (23rd), so unless there was definitive info provided by the evacuated crew, or perhaps from on-deck CCTV, I doubt anyone knows the cause of the fire yet although they may have information about where it started.
 
If it was caused by an electric car's batteries, why is this considered a new development? Haven't Toyota been shipping Priuses (Prii?) all round the world for many years? Or are the battery systems significantly different?
