Mercedes W204 Sport
Hi Guys, I am new to the Mercedes world and thoroughly enjoying my recently purchased 2008 W204 220 CDi Sport having come from the world of a Jaguar XF.

My first question on this great forum is about updating the Navigation software on my NTG4 Comand unit. I believe the existing software is the original as it does not recognise some roads in the UK and the Gracenote database is out of date. I have been given a set of 2011 discs for the NTG4 and my question is.......can I go directly to this set of updates without the previous updates being installed? Also I have recently had the car firmware updated by a MB specialist whilst doing another job for me, does this have any effect on the updates.

I have read many of the postings here on the forum about the methodology of updating and it seems straightforward , if a little time intensive, saying that I once had a BMW 5 series that took 2 days to have its software updated while linked to a computer in Germany so maybe 2 hours is not such a big issue.

Thanks in anticipation

I do you know what version the map is (the latest is v10 ) iI have the v10 disc and some of the roads are still not shown on the update, esp the lane positions on the M25 around the Essex area so they may have a delay on when the 'new' roads are on the updates. Richard or Alf will be your best bet and i'm sure there be on here soon. When I updated mine from v8 to v10 it took me just over 2 hours, so you then either leave the car running when you do it as if the battery gets low the unit will turn off and bugger the Comand right up!! or put a battery charger on it so it will save your fuel

You can upgrade to the 2011 that is fine. Firmware updates dont update map data.

Did my 2008 S204 a few months ago, from the original 2007 installation to latest version in one go without problem. As stated above, it takes over 2 hours, mostly for Disc 1, and you need ignition on to stop Comand shutting down. My suggestion - start engine, connect battery charger, switch off engine then turn ignition back on - this way you avoid a voltage spike, and do not burn fuel for the 2+ hours the update takes.

Also empty the CD changer - then when you insert update disc 1 it should autorun -mine did! Oh, and I hope the discs you have been given are genuine MB - if not, I'd suggest careful thought and research before using them. There are many stories about using copied discs and converting Comand to a useless lump of plastic. There are 2 styles of genuine MB discs - those in a full size DVD case are MB retail, those in a CD size case were supplied to MB dealers to update cars being serviced - and somehow some found their way into the open market.

The joy of NTG4 is that the discs are re-useable - the ones I used had been used by another 204 owner, I used them successfully then sold them on to another owner. The downside is that you still do not get 7 digit postcode entry - but I've used the satnav in UK, Ireland and France since updating and it's been fine.

Yes drop the DVD in and away you go...
I updated my last c220 that way but sold the 2011 DVD with the car.
So let me know if you want to sell yours on and I will use them and sell you them back..:thumb:

Your thoughts and suggestions very much mirror what I intend to do and hopefully will have a successful upgrade. Thanks for the info.

Quick revival of an old thread for anyone wanting firmware updated, when you get your service done through MB (main dealers only) they do all the firmware and software updates for free (excluding maps ofcourse). and they have a £50 off deal at the moment, so i got a service b done with everything updated for
£378.

Hi Blacklight,
You still have those NTG4 Version 10 maps for sale?

Hi bro, did you by the discs off backlight? if so are you now looking to sell them on? I know this thread is going back some time but i have just recently bought a 2009 c220 and it still has maps from 2009 does not even recognise stratford westfield, shows me driving through a forest at the moment and could really do with an update.

Hi Crackney,

Did you manage to update your maps? Thanks to chrishazle's post above I bought the DVD from Europe and have updated my NTG4 to 2014/2015.

If you or anyone else requires it let me know. It is on eBay.

The W211 never had NTG4. It has NTG1 or NTG 2.5

W212/W207 had NTG4 and this is different to W204 NTG4.

Thanks Alfie, I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to the E class, just knew that one of them had NTG4 and the E class DVD's are somehow different to the C class ones!
