Hi there. After 7 years I have decided to upgrade from W202. My cars performing very badly on fuel at the moment. Windows stopped working & there's huge dent on the 2 side doors, plus I need a bigger car to fit Me, wife & 3 boys who are of age 5, 2 & 10 month. There's not enough space in my C class to fit them with the car seats they must have. And I dont want a meagane scenic or a 7 seater. I dont want the MLs as per road tax cost.

I really like the W221 but it says everywhere that the running cost is really high. I also like the E class W211. If I was to get the W221 then it would be 320L diesel. And if I get the W211 then it would be 220 diesel.

I wanted to know what the difference in width is for the back seat between W221 & the W211. And is there a big difference in running cost. i.e servicing. And is it worth paying the hugh extra for W221.

Are you sure? have you worked out the MPG?

I know a couple of people who claim their cars have become thirsty, they hadnt really taken into account the cost of petrol has rocketed recently, have you?

Me too what they don't realise is it's neary 8 quid for 5 litres of petrol now.

£1.60 a litre? £1.35 at Tesco's on the way home from work.

That is some upgrade from C to S-class. At least your kids won't be able to keep kicking your seat back any time soon.

I figured its about time I upgrade. Friends are driving Audi A5, Q7, X5. some even have bentley & R8. Then I pull up to a gathering in my red broke down car with the windows up on a hot summer day :(

I want something nice but with decent MPG. I was thinking of gettign a CLS, but that plan went down the drain as I now need a 5 seater.

I noticed £10 petrol gives me under 30 miles. and £15 gives me 70 miles on the motorway driving around 70MPH & 80MPH tops (i drive like a granny since I crashed my FTO on the M1).

Will there be a big difference in servicing cost between a C class & S class? how much is a service by a specialist?

Cheers

I'm liking that...

Certainly be quite a difference from your 180.

Personally, I would consider something like this.

I don't know as I've never run a C or S but my E is around the same as other similar age E's, except if it needs AMG bits.

My guess is for regular service items, it wont be a lot more expensive than the C. However, parts will almost certainly be more expensive, and the S will be a lot more complicated - which presents more scope for stuff to go wrong.

I'd consider talking to a good independent who can tell you the likely costs.

The place I normally use is in Sidcup called Wright Tech - I notice you are in London but don't know where. There are other good indes if you state which part of London you are in. I've even seen one of these in that colour and around that age parked outside WT once so they will know the likely service costs and what can go wrong.

Thanks for the info. I will speak to an engineer as you advised. I'm not looking to get it until end of this year anyway so still have plenty of time to research :). Other then the dent & fuel consumption & the window fault the car drives superb. I had it around 6-7 years. Its only done 72k miles so I could keep it for longer if required. But I definotely want to know if its worth paying so much extra for the S class for the reason of having extra space for kids in car seat (and the better MPG by moving to diesel)
