Upgrading R129 sound system - advice needed

R129 SL320
Summer will soon be upon us (with some luck) and I want to get some more sound out of the SL.

I understand that the system currently runs at 1 ohm and the wiring loom goes from the head unit > factory amp > door speakers.

I don't want a subwoofer in the boot and was hoping to upgrade the door speakers and amp - is this possible and any recommendations?

Suggest a better option for roof down driving would be to improve the sound from the exhaust. :D

The R129 doesn't lend it self well to home brewed changes to the sound system due to the fact that it already uses and external amp and it has unusually rated speakers.

If you are to go down this route, you will need to rip out everything and start again. Its probably best to employ the services of a company that knows what they are doing if you are to get much of an improvement over the factory system which to be fair is pretty good for its vintage.

As per Spike's advice above, I started from a clean sheet with my 129 install. The rear seats were always pretty useless so I removed them and fitted a flat deck, under which there's a 4 channel D-class amp and a pair of 8" subs, plus 3-way components in the doors.

It's been in about 8 years now, so I'm considering a refresh in the next 6-12mths to run fully active front end.

Do you have any photos of the install?

I can take some, but there's not much to see really. Don't have any progress shots I'm afraid.

I e been driving a SL60 today with the bose system with subs and no back seats.

This could be an avenue to try as I have seen these come up for sale now and again.

Sound is much improved over the standard setup but not overly so.

Wots it like ? Is it really worth the asking price these days ?

Hmmm, by the time you've got the trim piece, the 2 sub boxes, subs and an amp to run it, it doesn't look much different in terms of cost to an aftermarket install.

I have seen the whole kits complete go for £300-£400 in the past.

That's a more reasonable sum.
