Hi Guys & Girls,

Need your help and knowledge, My E240 has developed what i can only describe as a clutch slip from the auto gearbox.. Its only really between 2nd & 3rd but she will occasionally clonk into gear, i thought nothing of it at first but now shes slipping i know i have a potentially expensive problem. Could this be as simple as the gearbox oil getting low or could it be a clutch/ gearbox issue end of? Can i check the gearbox oil level myself?

Your help as always will be great especially any pictures or how to guides

Thanks in advance

Dave

I had something very similar in my old (W140) CL500. After much sucking of teeth it was agreed that the 'box should be investigated; after a day or two of painfully expensive dismantling, the expert at MB Cambridge (yeah, I know, main agent) produced a broken spring. A tiny thing. The new part cost about a quid. The labour to strip the box, remove the bit, fit the new one and reassemble, plus a bucket of rather costly oil, came to over £400.

My suggestion fwiw (unless you can diy...) would be to get it to an independent expert urgently. At least my 'box was repairable.

As the title to your thread says if you think you are going to get stung by a MB specialist then maybe try a Mercedes main dealer and see whagt price you get.

As it is an auto box issue rather than a car issue you could look up an auto specialist rather than a MB one.

Still going to bite you of course but might be able to give you some further pointers if you ensure the fluids are ok.

Is this the consequence of the gearbox ECU leakage issue---can't remember the symptoms of that :o ---but its a common fault.:dk:

Mine had a similar problem, but only slipped when stone cold and in 1st. The issue was too low ATF fluid. The MB dealer charged 22 quid to sort it.

try MB first, they sometimes pleasantly surprise.

Thanks All, will look down the ATF route first i think.. process of elimination starts here.

Thanks again
Dave
