Not being up on matters of I.T. And the like, I'm not surewhat to do and need help.
I have changed from BT to Sky today and I've just switched my laptop on to be greeted by this 'MS Removal tool' which is telling me that I have 38 infections and I need to take out their protection at $59.95 to remove the aforementioned viruses etc.
Is this some kind of set-up or is this genuine? If I don't take them up on their offer what would happen and where would I go from here?
(I have started this thread from my phone so as not to spread these viruses?)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

It is malware - you should exit the software and then try and clean your PC using malware bytes.

It is not letting me do anything other than directing me to the MS removal page where it requests payment?

Press F8 at startup and boot your PC up in safe mode with networking and try again.

Spike is offering you sound advice. Unfortunately the old BT broadband service may have incorporated an internet security package. By changing broadband provider this may have been removed or disabled allowing malware to infect your computer. In addition to removing your present problem you should immediately upgrade your security since it would appear you don't have an adequate level at present.

You have been hit by one of the worst viruses on the net. I have seen this many times. as suggested boot into safe mode with networking then go to www.malwarebytes.org and BUY the full version If that doesnt work your looking at formatting the hardrive

I've just spoke to the person that did all the antivirus/ firewall etc on my laptop, and they have said that it's a really bad virus from eBay that is affecting a lot of people just lately.

eBay are having none of it by the sounds of it.

All I do on the Internet is go on this forum, eBay, autotrader, pistonheads and a few other car/van websites and that's it! I don't download films or anything else and I've still been stung...

Depending upon what level of security have, it doesn't really matter where you go on the internet you can be 'exposed' just by being online.

Out of interest what Operating System are you using, Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7?

This virus comes in several guises Its can be Security Tools. Security Tools 2011. and the latest I have seen calls itself Internet Security 2011. This is really bad as that is the name of AVG's latest anti virus program. The virus pops up telling you your PC is infected. Clicking on any part of it will activate it Dont try to click it off Just shut down your browser Or even press the off button on your PC. Once its on your system It will prevent you from going anywhere it doesnt want you to go. It stops windows from updating and disables your antivirus.

It can pop up on any website you happen to be on Its not confimed to any. The best protection against it is to BUY the full version of Malwarebytes and it will monitor in the background and stop any of these nasties in their tracks

My laptop is running Vista.

The advice posted above is sound, you should be able to remove it as described. If you have any issues keep us all posted.

Once you've removed it, ensure that you're 'Service Packed' and have critical updates installed.

All sorted! :)
I did a system restore from 4 days ago to get rid of the b*stard virus!

Why do people start these viruses????

Money, that simple. They want control of your PC to be part of their botnet that they will use for a fee for sending spam, denial of service attacks or cracking encryption.

Rustock botnet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Make sure you have automatic updated enabled, MS security essentials running and close dodgy windows from task manager or the tool bar. Don't click th close button on the window, it lies.

It seems to me to be a good old fashioned protection racket; these anti-virus/firewall etc firms are the ones sending out these viruses and then selling you the remedy.

It's like something out of The Godfather, but with nerds & computers as opposed to lunatic Italian mobsters...
